Is SL's adult content the next to go ?

Facebooks metaverse has avatars entirely missing everything below the waist line. ROBLOX and others have strong moderation policies.

Only Fans is banning adult content October 1st 2021 to satisfy demands from banking and credit processing partners.

Obviously, the suggestion that SL wouldn't be silly enough to try is no longer valid, Only Fans are a much bigger business than SL and they just told Tumblr to hold their beer and went for it.

Should we be worried ?

if paypal kicks LL to the curb over it, than worry,  otherwise, I think our content is here to stay, it would also take to much work to remove content,  so shutting down without notice or restarting with zero assets is the only way I can think of.

How would they implement Sex Life without sex?   Remove Adult regions, and only allow Moderate rated rules?  I could live with that.   Escorts would just go underground.  They can't remove lower bodies - what would the women do without new shoes?

If SL removed adult content you would see the equivalent of a tsunami roll through and SL would be toast within a month.  They would be better off just closing and retaining the memories.

If they did start restricting adult content and activities, I would look at how they have done it at IMVU where a stiffy is a no-no but everything else is pretty open. So *****es allowed but just not ones that get hard.

That's what I always figured, it would be a suicidal move that would hit the active population hard enough the platform would never recover.

.. but Only Fans is far more heavily dependent on adult content than we are and they just went full YOLO.

SL has Tilia, which is owned by LL, so it seems unlikely that SL as a whole will be badly affected by a paypal ban. However it will affect people for whom paypal is their only option to access the Lindex. But LL were wise to establish their own payment system.

Onlyfans will be toast though.

Only if LL has a backup plan and can make it instant.  as people have paypal linked and verified to cash out and such.   no paypal,  no money moving,  means bad things.

There's a considerable difference between pixel sex in SL and live shows on Only Fans by sex workers.

I'll worry about it when it happens.

If sexual conduct and sexual content is no longer allowed in SL, especially today, SL will be on its last legs.

It might have been one thing to cut off sex in SL's early days, but it is too prominent and far too entrenched in SL's allure, culture and commerce.

The mesh head/body and clothing industry is heavily influenced by it's allowance/presence.

You think people are going to pay tons of money for a hot avatar to just play e-house, go e-clubbing or art exhibit/museum hopping?

And people in IMVU get around that with custom content in private rooms, the same as they do in VRChat.

Sex and bits have existed in both since their infancy.

But those are black market and it gets tiring having to repurchase after Imvu does a cleanout. Still, Imvu has survived and grown in spite of it so I would not agree it would be a death knell for S/L.

But you're not buying sexual oriented goods with Paypal, you're buying L$.

There's no longer any onus on Paypal or Visa or MC what anyone uses L$ on, nor a record on a billing statement.

All that is left are religious fundamentalists, soccer moms, bloggers and online tabloids.

That's too big a hit to upend the industry in SL overnight, imo.

Well in Imvu it is mostly peer reviews and resident flagging that restrict and set the tone of the community guidelines, so the way that it might take form here is that the more extreme kink starts getting pressured to clean up and go more underground. The inworld creation is going to make cleanup more difficult anyways than it was for Imvu where creators are registered and can be banned for contravening content guidelines.

No.

Facebook's offering as well as ROBLOX are meant for far different audiences/age ranges than Second Life. Only Fans dealt with the content and money more directly and had quite the RL Adult Content presence - they're taking the nuclear option, similar to Tumblr. Even dedicated Adult Content services have - in the last year or so - nuked content and placed stricter guidelines and such in, in an effort to combat trafficing and such.

None of that really applies here.

I wouldn't say "it would never happen" because my work deals a lot of credit card processing eligibility and the MATCH list. These things can sneak up on you. Take a look at how Pornhub had to do a big purge. That was due to pressure from credit card companies.

Second life might be OK because they process their funds through tilla, who they also own.  This gives them an amazing degree of freedom and bargaining power. The general rule of thumb in my industry is that for sexual content expect to have about 5-8% of all transactions eaten in fees. Sexual content is also not all equal. Tilla might help them cut that down a ton.

Visa is also more touchy about depictions of non-consent, blood, physical abuse (even bdsm) and hypnosis (go figure) than they are with good ol' missionary sex. If anyone ever followed the purge in Fetlife and new rules there, you'd have a good idea of what content would go first if there was a crackdown.
