Asian Avatars.

So I noticed I haven't seen too many Asian avatars in the SL world myself so I thought about making this post where people post a pic of their Asian avis to share with the world. Being half Filipino I've always admired Asian beauty growing up and I only wish I could see it more around me. I'll start us off:

Like I said, I'm half Filipino IRL so I tried to match somewhat what I look like. I know I don't look traditionally Asian like Japanese or Chinese but I am half Asian and look like my Filipino half unlike my other White half which is what my avatar mirrors. You're the first and only person to tell me this, whereas others have had no problem seeing my avatar as Asian.

I apologize for not saying half Asian, I will fix it if it means that much. As for my reply, I didn't fix it "over and over", I fixed what I initially said once besides spelling errors. The only thing I'm taking personal is what feels like gate keeping here. To say "no matter what country you're trying to represent, you do not look Asian at all." whenever I'm just trying to represent myself here, which I'm half Filipino so therefore I tried to make my avatar represent myself and my looks which is that of Filipino which is also Asian. I'm not trying to be Japanese or Chinese, I'm just trying to be myself and support other Asian avatars here. Meanwhile it seems like you took that to offense? Or maybe you don't consider Filipinos to be Asian? I'm not really sure but to offend was not at all my intentions. I'm just trying to make a post to celebrate and showcase Asian avatars like myself, whether you think mine looks half Asian, or not, others seem to think it does and it does not change what I believe my avatar looks like, represents or what I'm trying to do here.

Americans tend to lump ethnic groups together like that example everyone who has characteristics of east Asian people like an Epicanthic fold are lumped together as "Asian" ignoring the fact that Asia is a big place not only are the different east Asian people different but outside that Asia includes people from India, Russia, the steppes so on and so forth, and we all look different.  But even what are commonly called "White People" are different people, in appearance Mediterranean, Gemanic Scandinavian Slavs

And African people gets confusing because there's over 1000 different cultural groups who get muddled together as "Africans"

But I think it's a US issue because ethnic groups are muddled there three is genetic evidence that up to 30% of Americans  who identify as "White" have African admixture but the number fluxates wildly as more people get Genetic testing done.

don't let others tell you what you are, or not.
In special in this case, you are the only one to be judge. If your look represents you, ignore the purists.

This is precisely why I don't fully understand why I'm being told "you do not look Asian to me" when Asia is a huge place and not all Asians have the same characteristics. Or "Black hair and brown eyes is not only for Asians!" as if I don't know this. I'm certainly not trying to lump people together by looks, only those that are considered "Asian". Unless the issue is Filipinos aren't considered Asian or part of Asia like I've been taught my whole life I really do not understand the issue here.

You can make your avi look however you want, doesn't have to be precisely "Asian". My nationality is Indian, but my ethnicity is Asian, and avi doesn't look like that of an Asian as well. I have brown skin, sl and rl, and a round face. And that's how my avi looks like. Round face and brown skin with only tints of asian figures. So don't let others tell you how you should look like, that's none of their business.

Thank you. I tried to make my avi look like me because I am proud of my ethnicity, it's the same reason why I made this post. I believe our ethnicity should be celebrated and shared. ❤️

Be proud of who you are, and always love yourself. Changing yourself just for the sake of others won't make you feel happy from within. Girl when you woke up this morning, you DID NOT woke up to impress others. And thank you for the compliment. I'm wearing the Inthium Kupra body with head Lelutka Lilly, although my bf helped me with the shape.

Also very nice! I'm using the Lelutka Lilly head too! I know she was free some time back but I would've chose her anyways because she looks Filipino to me. ^^

I often enough look like anything I feel like in SL from mole to cat and blonde to japanese that's the lovely thing about SL. But a forum is for discussion and when someone can not handle people with differing opinions than forums are maybe not for them. No, because like you said this is a forum, it's for discussion and that's exactly what's happening here even though my hopes was just to celebrate and share Asian avatars--not to be criticized for mine. It would be different if you simply said "You don't look asian", but you go on, not only repeating it as if it wasn't clear the first time, but acting as if I don't know what Asian people look like or as if I don't know the difference between the race and ethnicity while giving me backhanded compliments. Just because you don't see my avi as Asian doesn't change the fact that I am half Asian so why wouldn't I know these things? You're coming off like a gatekeeping elitist, which is why Alwin used the word "purist". The question still remains if you consider Filipinos as Asian because when you say things like "Well you said "Asian" avatar and not half Filipino", it looks a little bit like you don't. Why would someone Filipinos not count as asian is beyond me and even the accusation of this is so ridiculous that I don't even take that for full. And I offered to take it to IM because it's not allowed in the forums to take threads that far from the title, and for you to say such things in public like calling me an elitist gatekeeper in by now several threads won't help yourself so I was just offering you to take it to IM so you don't get a strike here.

That's a relief, to be fair you said it yourself, "Well you said "asian" avatar and not half Filipino avatar in your first post " which is why I asked why did it matter?  We've been on the same topic so I don't see how it's far from the title, you need not to worry about that. I'm not nor am I worried about "strikes" when all I'm doing is discussing and trying to understand your point of view.

If I offended you with "gatekeeper", it wasn't my intent other than to explain to you how you were coming off as. There was no better word to describe it nor is it meant to be an insult.

@Yosho Sirnah Well... now you've met a number of the unconscious woke virtue signaling their PC conformance to modern day racism and cultural appropriation concepts... and trying to get you to conform to their idea of correctness, which I think has little to do with reality. This may be your introduction to such people. Learn from it, which I think is mostly an exercise in ignoring the thoughtless.

Americans are provincial more so than cosmopolitan. Until they have lived overseas or traveled extensively their experience of the wold is from TV. They can't be expected to have accurate ideas about the rest of the world. Knowing that, appropriately salt whatever the obviously uninformed say on matters outside America. Said another way, don't take them seriously.

 

Saying your avatar does or does not look Asian has nothing to do with your avatar. It is a statement revealing what they think and their values. I know I thought the beauty part of the statement was right on. Very pretty avatar. The ethnicity part saying Asian only partially fit "my" idea of what I think an Asian looks like. But my ideas are colored by my travels through the Philippines, China, and Thailand along with growing up in America and liking anime. So, for me there are hints of an Asian look, but yeah... she could be Asian. That you feel the look is a tribute to Asian beauty is your expression of the art of creating an avatar. Artiest are free to express their ideas as they want. I think you did really well. Thanks for sharing. My opinions on your looks are just "opinions".

Although I would not say when I saw the avatar you made it was Asian as determined by standard classifications I think it is very pretty. It does have a anime quality to it.  Having said that. Ethnic charged threads are doomed to fail. You can go into how does your avatar look today and see a whole lot of Asian influenced avatars. As well as African and furries! Your photos would be well received there I am sure.

Thread got derailed but here's my contribution, including some non-conforming avatars.  Reptilian is the new Asian you know.

I'm a Japanese and although most of the Japanese friends I have on SL don't really look Asian (why stick to RL when you are in SL!), I tend to keep making my avatars look Asian because it used to be a fun challenge to make Asian avatars that actually look Asian and the habit stuck with me.   Back in the days I had to be creative as there was literally no decent Asian skin in the market.  These days we have tons of gorgeous Asian skins coming out almost daily from various creators, so the challenge is gone but the fun remains.

To OP:  Your avatar looks very pretty with south-east Asian vibes.  We may look very different depending on the geographical locations and origins but we have so much more important things in common -- like passionate love for rice🤣
