Problem with object rotation

Question

Hello,

I am looking for help because I was unable to find solutions to my problem. I did a clean install of my viewer and tried it on Firestorm viewer or SL viewer. And the problem is the same.

Since few days, when I want to rotate an object with no boundaries (without using the axes XYZ), it gets stuck for a while and then unlocks violently. As if there was a magnetic resistance at the beginning, it is very strange and very annoying. I have to use the XYZ axes and it bothers me a lot.
I put you a little video for you to understand better : https://gyazo.com/3ff23733068f8c7e6b80d9a70e1892f4

If you have any solution for me, thank you very much.

Thank you for your answer Alwin.

I'm not sure to understand what you are saying when you say "selected direction"? Are you talking of colored axes? I don't select them on purpose, because I want to rotate in all directions at the same time with no boundaries (without using the colored axes) . It's easier and more accurate in this way.

Before I could rotate this way without resistance.

I asked to a friend to do it and she doesn't have the problem. She can move the cube directly without resistance at the start : https://gyazo.com/4ddf3b4032dfabaf2f3a511977cf3266

Both viewers, huh? As far as I know, everything you see while the mouse-button is down in the "Build Tool" editor is happening purely locally, with the sim only informed with an update when the mouse-button is released. So I think there's something going wrong on the local machine. And if it happens in both viewers... maybe someone should look at the Help/About viewer text. (Like, could the recent change be a bad graphics driver update? Or OS update?)

Would help to see your edit menu settings, like if Snap was checked or not. Would help to know what Grid Options settings you have checked. Would help to know what your reference is, World, Local or Reference. Would also help to know what your draw distance is and how far away from your avatar the object is.

Hello Lucia and Qie,

Here, I did a screenshot of my edit tool :  https://gyazo.com/b4e670fad09293c504d2d74df7f540ef

Snap is checked, my reference is World. Everything is selected as before I got the problem.

My draw distance is at 1024 most of the time and my distance from the object is only few meters. I tried different draw distances.

I tried on a third viewer called Black Dragon, I installed older Nvidia drivers. And still the same problem..

This is really incomprehensible.

Yeah. I'm trying to think of what could possibly have changed in the past "few days" which was why I wondered about a driver or OS update; now I'm wondering if it could possibly be some setting or hardware weirdness with your mouse or other pointing device. (Obviously I'm drawing from the bottom of the barrel here.)

Can you take a pic of your Grid Options settings? The arrow next to Snap.

I compared it with a friend and he has the same numbers in the grid options.

Under Advanced, what is the status of your "Limit Select Distance" & "Disable Camera Constraints" settings?

Can you take a pic of your Build > Options settings?

Hello Lucia, thank you for your help :)

"Limit Select Distance" is unchecked. "Disable Camera Constraints" is checked. You can see here : https://gyazo.com/e4de9d7c741f39e157c4c43bcfacf908

For the build options are you talking about that ? https://gyazo.com/72f090535ae2e123201f8faefafced15

Yes and with matching your settings I still can't repro. 😕

Since it also repros on SL's viewer, I would file a ticket with support and reference this thread.

they can't find a solution for my problem either.

Well that's not very satisfying.

I'm sure this is wrong but I can't get it out of my head without asking: You don't use a wireless pointing device, like a bluetooth mouse or something like that? Or a mouse "acceleration" setting somehow adding hysteresis to the start of the motion?

(But the problem only happens when rotating freely, not using the axes, right? So it makes no sense for there to be something with the pointing device. But you've already done a clean install of a whole different viewer, so it sorta can't be viewer settings. This is quite a puzzle—as you say, "really incomprehensible.")

It might be changes in the viewers, I say this because I have the same problem in Firestorm, and a newer version of Singularity, but for an older version of Alchemy it worked as it should.  I also checked all of my settings to ensure snap was not enabled.

I went as far as to go on my opensim region, and test it with Firestorm and I had the same behavior as you are having.

This is promising, having another instance of it happening. What Firestorm version are you using? I just tried with Firestorm 6.4.13 (63251) and don't get the problem, but maybe we should be checking more details about the machines, too. Here's the stuff from Help/About for my machine:

Ah @Istelathis finally I find someone with the same problem ! I felt a bit alone ^^

It's interesting to know that it does that only with new versions.. Should we try with an older version of Firestorm ?

@Qie Niangao I tried with an another mouse and same :)

Here my specs :

@Gorba McMahonI don't think we can go back too far in Firestorm, I tried a few minutes ago with 6.2.4.5 and couldn't log in as firestorm wouldn't let me.  Alchemy was the only one that worked for me, but it hasn't been updated for a while.  For Alchemy, my version is Alchemy 6.3.6 which is actually the newest version, I had mistakenly thought I was using an older version - still it hasn't been updated since April of 2020.

Since we all used the same Firestorm and I can't make the problem happen, I'm not seeing how it can be the viewer version (unless that's interacting with some other factor like hardware, settings, drivers, etc.)  Comparing the configurations, I realized I hadn't updated my NVIDIA drivers to the latest, so I just did, tried again, and still can't get the problem.

We all have remarkably similar settings reflected in the configuration list, too. At first the different UI and font scaling seemed suspicious, so I tried them both and couldn't make the problem happen.

Other stuff I could try, I guess: Settings mode: Firestorm (instead of "Viewer 6"). Maybe full-screen? (I see you're both using larger windows.) Otherwise the main difference I see is that my graphics card lags a few generations.

@Qie NiangaoI tried fullscreen and it has the same result.  It behaves almost like I had snap on when I try to move it on it's x axis via free hand, trying to rotate it otherwise and it is fine.  The other behavior I find strange, is that after it temporarily locks in place on the x axis is that once it is free it will move without any more locking until I release the mouse and try again.  I never rotate objects this way, I usually rely on the axis guides to rotate them so I am not sure how long this behavior has been occurring.  Using the axis guides to rotate, does not result in any odd behavior.

I think this is some corrupted/unintended unexposed viewer setting that might have got changed during a dirty install.

Have you tried doing a complete settings wipe and/or uninstall and clean install without then doing a backup to see if it repros on default settings?
