Phil Deakins
The silly thing is that Mother's Day was nothing to do with a parent. The 'mother' in Mother's Day was mother church. It's been hijacked lol. It is good to have a special day for mothers (and fathers), but the mother in Mother's Day was mother church, not a parent. That's according to QI. That's according to QI. I believe in Wikipedia here, you can read from there how this Mother’s Day started. At least my country started celebrating Mother’s Day as it had been celebrated in the United States at the time. The British Mothering Sunday is a bit different thing.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day
Phil Deakins
@Ansiri Ah. Thank you. Here (UK) Mother's Day and Mothering Sunday are the same thing. It very unlikely than many people here know about the roots of Mothering Sunday, and the phrases are interchangeable, although we rarely hear the phrase 'Mothering Sunday'. So it's specifically Mothering Sunday that is about the mother church. It seems that different countries have different ideas and origins about it. To the best of my knowledge, we don't have a flower associated with it. QI, where I got my information from, is a British TV programme. I didn't realise that the information only applied to the UK. I assumed it was international. The originator of the U.S. Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis was against the commercialisation of it, so she would frown on LL for seeking to profit from it What I don't understand is that Mother's Day is on a Sunday, so what difference/benefit does making it an official holiday make? Sid Nagy
Mothers day is at the end of a week when the flowers are at least twice as expensive as during the rest of the season. So don't try to sell me the non commercial meme. Edited May 9, 2021 by Sid Nagy

Silent Mistwalker
Quote Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2021 will occur on Sunday, May 9. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and other gifts. Quote Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/mothers-day
ItHadToComeToThis
I understand the sentiment but I can't help but feel that most of the new last names are nothing more than gimmicks. I get that gimmicks sell, but it would be nice to have some more semi normal last names. The gimmick angle is getting old.
