21 years of version 2. Wild.

To be fair, with all the stuff added (and some removed) as well as the interface overhaul in 2.8 and 2.9, it might as well be its own major version.

They're just numbers after all.

Really? I had no idea the 2's took so long. I wonder how long the 3's will last. I just hope the interface doesn't change much, as it was severe when 2.8 came out, and many never made the switch.

Planning is for only 2 years.  From  August 2021 to August 2023.

https://code.blender.org/2020/02/release-planning-2020-2025/

Proposal: 1 LTS per year, major release cycles each 2 years

2.8 + 2.9 series wrap

Finish the original 2.8 targets and focus on polishing for the first two LTS.

3.0 series

New numbering, after 21 years the Blender 2.x series gets a wrap!

4.0 series

2.8 Should have been 3.

Actually them not naming it 3 was a source of grief because I mistakenly installed it thinking it would be backward compatible because only the minor version changed not realizing it was some whole new thing

Sane blender version numbering is an exciting prospect all on it's own.

Well, Coffee, I thought I was just not techie enough to understand their naming conventions....but not so huh?
