Hi Doc, I'll have a go at answering this one as both an erotic dancer/stripper and escort (and in SL for a decade now, off-and-on).

To answer the second part first, yes, as an erotic dancer/stripper I do expect to be tipped more than dancers in music clubs, mostly due to the sexual and erotic nature of the work I'm performing, in addition to often being naked or nearly so. Both types of dancers have the goal of entertaining a customer in a club, but the expectation of most customers in a strip club is that I will, pardon the term, "put out" more and be more sexual and flirtatious with you than a music club dancer might be. That's the nature of my job ... to titillate in a much more hardcore and directly sexual fashion.

Now as to amount, this is where it gets really tricky. That is dependent on a lot of factors, some of which are in the dancer's control, some in the customer's, and some in the club's. Let's look at each of these three ...

In terms of clubs, some set a minimum tip expectation to let the dancers do anything more than a polite, "Thank you for your tip, sweetie!" from stage. There are set tip amounts to get a dancer topless and/or fully nude in most places, and they also remind customers through notices on the wall and Nearby chat that we are there in the club actually working, and that our amount of attention we will engage you with is dependent on your tips, implying quantity (amount or frequency) will get you better served. That said, any tip is appreciated and we tend to be always friendly (and flirtatious) with everyone, because it's good for the club, our reputations, and to possibly even make more tips. But don't forget, most of the quality clubs take a percentage of our tips from us for the improvements and running of the club, so when you do tip? Remember, I don't get all of it. Also, one club I now work at (and LOVE!!!) allows any amount of tip for me to step off stage and not only thank you, but provide you a little in-lap playtime. Not long, but enough so that you know we're thrilled that you're visiting, and am enjoying your company.

Aside: Most of us who do this professionally in SL have detailed monthly spreadsheets about hours worked, tips collected, escorting fees collected, etc. And customers? Please take time to read the club rules/tips etc posted on the walls and/or club rules info cards, thanks!

Customers. We love you guys (and girls ;) ). Really. The good ones of us do not erotically dance and entertain just for the tips, we do it because we enjoy it, we're having fun, we are good at it, and we genuinely like seeing customers happy and having a good time. Really, really. The tips are just a nice thank you and make us feel good for doing a good job entertaining. So I am okay with a regular guy who comes into one of the two clubs I dance at every few days, tipping me say 100L and expecting 15 minutes of fun conversation, a lot of flirting, some sexy tease, etc. But a client being a demanding jerk? That same tip? It's "Thank you so much" and I continue dancing. I'm not rude, but you guys can make our jobs so much more fun if you get into it a bit and play along with the happy part. We're people behind the avatars.

The nicer you are? That makes more of a difference to me, and most of the good girls (and guys) doing this. That 100L guy who tips me twice in a session, compliments my outfit, tells me I'm sexy, makes a point to stop in and say hello, says my new hair looks great, always says bye? We adore them. Makes up for the rude ones tipping me 500L thinking they own me. So how you behave and act is easily as important as the amount of the tip. How much? Check the atmosphere of the club and watch what other customers are tipping.

If you have a small budget walking in, say so when you tip us (in a private IM if you feel shy) and we're happy to accommodate, because a) you're a great guy, we have fun, and b) maybe one day you might walk into a club with 2K in your pocket ;) And fellas? Flirt back! We love it.

Dancers. Hmm. Yeah, some look for the big tippers. Me? I personally love getting to know my regulars and the nice guys who just tip a bit from time to time to engage me. For me, any tip is a lovely expression of your connection to me. The amount doesn't matter, the way it is presented and our interaction counts for more.

But you wanted numbers? The smallest tips these days are 50-100L. A big tip for dancing/stripping (no sex) might be 500-1000, and in many clubs that will also get you some private or dedicated time with a girl in your lap for much longer than the average thank you, if given all at once (again, usually no sex). It ranges all over. Look at the place and the girls and the other customers, what are they doing? What are the girls worth to you? How great are they? The effort we make in emoting and dancing and dressing sexy and looking our best, etc?

I'm as happy for little tips as big, and that goes for both dancing/stripping, and my escorting work ( though most of us have very specific rates for times/sexual acts for the escorting stuff ;) ).

Finally, you can't compare RL to SL but people spend $5 (or more!) on a cup of organic coffee that goes cold in 20 minutes. That's about 1250L. You know how much pleasure you can get with 1250L just tipping a girl over an hour with that? So $5/hour, tipped out 100L every few minutes and you get great flirting/teasing conversation, a girl dancing naked for you, and paying attention to only you? Come on, easily worth it! :)

Does that help at all?

Tipping in general is problematic in some ways. The value of the L$ is extremely vague (until you cash it out - when its value will vary widely depending on where you live). Whilst hosting, a guy once said that he wanted to buy the DJ and myself a beer. The DJ lived in the US and a beer in a pub near her cost $3.49. Me being a Swede, on average I pay 60 crowns for a beer - which today is $7.14, but then was around $8.50. But, because he really wanted to specifically buy us each a beer, he threw L$2,200 at me, and L$1,300 at her.

I noticed the same thing when working on an auction in SL. Some people went for L$500 for a 7 day contract, wherein there's a minimum of 2 hours per day with the client, and that all time spent online you must be available to them. Others went for L$85K, usually because they did cam/voice - that's still just over $250 for having practically unlimited access to a private cam show for a week, versus $1.50. Neither of which compare to how much you'd pay if you went on an actual webcam escort site, where the average prices (according to Google) is around $5 ($1.88-$7.69) per minute (or $300 per hour).

Besides, tipping is very American. In Sweden, tipping is almost rude and patronising if you do much more than round off a restaurant bill to let the waiter keep the change. In the early days of SL, many of the tip jars I came across had the price suggestions at L$1, L$5, L$10, and L$20 - these days you'll usually go from L$50-$500 increments. As a Swede, I find that really hard to swallow, and generally if the suggested tips are too high I'll either make a custom tip much lower - less than I would pay if the prices were 'reasonable' - or I just don't tip at all.

Furthermore, there's the patron's individual reasoning for tipping and their economical situation. If a host welcomes me to a club with a gesture, and does nothing but spew out pre-fabricated messages about tipping the DJ and joining the group and supporting the club, they're unlikely to get anything from me. If a host is chatty and welcoming and actually make it a more pleasant experience, I'll usually chuck them L$100 or so. Same thing with DJs; if they just spin the usual radio tunes that everyone else does, I'm not tipping them. How much I want to tip someone is highly dependent on their performance - if I ever did go to a strip club in SL, the same would probably apply.

I use to tip dancers min 50 L$ and hardly more than 100 L$. That's about 10 Euro cents respectively 20. That's not exactly a fortune. Sometimes I feel like a penny pincher to be honest. Btw, the highest tip I have ever seen in SL was 2 times 100,000 L$. I guy in a Brasilian club tipped the DJ with that.
