Assuming you are talking about the Marketplace, it does help to be inworld to receive your product.  Mainly you avoid the issue of messages getting capped while you are away and the product failing to deliver.  Mainly depends on how many IMs and notices you normally get when you first log in.

Items don't show anywhere else but in game, but I guess it will be sufficient to be virtually, not physically, present to unpack them.
Items are transferred to your account whether you are logged in or not.
It is still up to you to receive and unpack what you buy and for that you need to be logged in.
