This would actually be 100% fine if its being baked down to a much lower poly model, it looks nice in render but all that detail can (and should) be transferred to something more appropriate for the use case.

It bothers me a bit to see this being more or less encouraged by showing this as "modeling for second life" when really the video should be twice as long since this is only half the process of modeling for secondlife, the rest being baking to a lower poly mesh. In the other posts Kyrah linked I noticed its stated these are using a 1k texture, which can hold enough detail for normals and such to transfer properly in the bake down. I've been meshing for SL for a few years (5-6 ish I think) and while you can get away with something doesn't mean you should, a more efficient and lag free SL is a happy SL.
