I have a Maitreya Mesh body demo I want to try on but how do I save or backup my Avatar so not to lose it? Does this question make sense?

I'm afraid I'm going to mess up my avatar I have by trying on the demo. I wish the demo came with a notecard it is a shame that it doesn't come with directions. How does the creator expect someone to pay such a high Linden price for the body if neither the demo or the body come with a notecard with directions?

I appreciate any help on  these matters.

Thank you,

Sassy

I just make an outfit

I should say, I save it as an outfit.

I always recommend making a copy of your shape before demoing any body or head and place a copy in the head or body folder.  When you're ready to try the demo, wear that shape in the folder so your original shape is saved in case you want to play around with the sliders.

@Rowan Amore How do I make a copy of my shape?  Are you saying to wear the copy shape when trying on the demo? See this is why the demos and mesh bodies should come with directions.

Right click on the shape you are wearing in inventory.  Choose copy.  Then go to the Maitreya file, right click on the file and paste.  NOT paste as link, just paste.  When you are ready to demo the body, wear that copy in the maitreya folder.  The original shape will be the one you saved when you saved the outfit .

Saving an outfit

You can easily save your current outfit by using the Appearance window:

Customize your avatar's appearance to your liking. For tips and helpful information about customizing your avatar, see Controlling your avatar's appearance.

Once you've settled on a look, open the Appearance window by choosing Me > Appearance... from the top menu bar of the Second Life Viewer.

Press the Save As button to save what you are currently wearing as a new outfit.

Choose an appropriate name for your outfit and press the Ok button.

If you want to save changes to an existing outfit, you can click that outfit in the Outfit Gallery or My Outfits tab of the Appearance window to select it, then press the triangle next to the Save As button to reveal and click the Save option.

You can save your current look by saving your outfit. Not really sure why you need to make a copy of the shape, unless you plan to make changes...where as you can just use the 'save as' function.  Wearing the Demo body has no effect on your shape what so ever.

Also the Maitreya has a help button on the MISC tab on the HUD.  That help button takes you to the online manual. You can also join the inworld group : Maitreya Lara Friends.... tons of help to be found there :)

Making a copy and placing it in the maitreya folder lets you play around with the shape without effecting your original saved shape.  I do it when demoing heads as well.  That way it's there where and when I might want to go back and mess with the demo again.  I usually rename it shape for maitreya demo or lelutka demo.  Especially since the OP hadn't even realized she could save an outfit.  I'd hate to see her adjusting her demo then wonder why her old shape is off when she wears the outfit since items are saved as links.

Oh Yes. Backup that shape! I was demoing a new head once and when I went back to my saved outfit my face was all messed up! I did make a shape copy and named it as a demo shape but after trying on multiple heads I just forgot to switch over. With faces it takes me several months of calibrating until it is just right and to lose it all is frustrating.

@Rowan Amore I made a copy of my current shape and put it in the folder like you suggested. My next question is do I open that shape and then start trying on the demo as instructed from the Maitreya website? I feel like I'll have to different Avatars open in my house. The copy and then a current one? Does that makes sense the way I am wording this? I feel so silly sometimes trying to figure all of this out especially as someone who isn't usually very nervous around technology. Sometimes I feel very "old" in SL trying to learn all this new stuff. I appreciate the community and all the help and advice they give. I want to start look cute and not like I just arrived in SL especially after being here for a while.

You can only wear one shape at a time. As long as you saved your current outfit as previously mentioned, Wear the copy of your shape that you put in the maitreya folder then add the maitreya demo body.

@Rowan AmoreI'm not sure if this is a new topic. If I build a new avatar how do I save the one I have? Just the way I would above? Save the or copy the body and then start new? I see people building new Avis but what do you do with other ones you built and I like?

You can save outfits.  That's why when I want to try a new head or body, I make a copy of my shape and put it in that folder with the head or body I'm demoing.  That way, it won't mess up the shape in your saved outfit.

When you're ready to try a new body, open that body folder and wear the copied shape you put in there then continue building the body, editing to your liking.  This is especially important when trying new heads as each head looks entirely different depending on your shape.

When you want your old look back, open the outfits folder and find it (I name mine something like ROWAN BASE OUTFIT.  Right click and replace.

@Rowan Amore I am sorry to keep coming back to this question; however, I am still lost on how to wear the copied shape.

This is what you said: When you're ready to try a new body, open that body folder and wear the copied shape you put in there then continue building the body, editing to your liking.  This is especially important when trying new heads as each head looks entirely different depending on your shape.

Did you make a copy of your original shape?  Did you put that copy in the folder with the body demo?  To make a copy, find the shape in your inventory that you are currently wearing, right click, copy NOT copy as link but just COPY.  Then, right click on the body demo folder and paste.  When you open the body demo folder, you should now see that shape copy.  Right click on that copy and wear.
