You need an AO hud for animations. You can open animations from your inventory and play them inworld, but you have to open them again and agan after every logging in/crash. These are only two possibilities which I know.

The default animations will play when no Animation Overirder is replacing them. So if you don`t want to use an AO then you will be stuck with the default ones.

However, there is a built in AO on the Phoenix viewer, so you wouldn`t actually have to wear one to use that.

Not that this adds anything to the great answers already posted, but maybe it helps explain them ..... The reason an AO is called an AO is that it Overrides the default Animations.  If you don't use an overrider, you're stuck with the defaults.

If you don't want to wear an AO, you might try using one the TPVs -- Phoenix or Singularity, certainly, and maybe Imprudence but I can't remember -- that have a client-side AO.   In effect, this means you keep your AO anims and configuration cards in a special folder in your inventory, and the viewer plays them from there in the same way an AO hud would play them from its inventory.
