Thinking more about the issues discussed in this thread gave me some additional ideas. It definitely would be better if the starter Linden avatars were better quality, i.e., simplified versions of popular commercial mesh avatars that came with a small wardrobe of good-quality fitmesh clothing.  LL could do it. They could offer creators of popular bodies the opportunity to have their body used. It could only be good for business for people to become immediately familiar with their products; many would eventually upgrade to the full version. The same would be true for the clothing creators.

Should my supposition that creators would be eager to participate be wrong, LL could still do it because the TOS gives LL  an unlimited license to do anything they want with anything that is uploaded. If LL took that route, creators might be unhappy, but they'd be unlikely to shut down a lucrative business.

The simplified avatar should be BOM and mesh only, no appliers and no non-BOM option. All of the clothing coming with it should be weell-fitting fitmesh, making alpha masks unnecessary.

Newcomers should receive prominent direction to a well-produced, entertaining video covering the basics of avatars, movement, and navigating SL.

Well, if they also disable any animations aside from the T-pose, sure.

Alpha masks are super easy to make, it's not an unreasonable expectation for a clothing creator to take those extra 5 minutes and an L$10-20 upload after finishing up a piece of clothing to provide one - most creators before mesh bodies were a thing did it, and many creators are already doing so again to accommodate BOM. Should they fail to provide them, that's going to A) alienate potential customers who do not know how, alternatively can't be bothered to make their own and B) make their brand's CSRs eventually quit, probably.

No matter how well fitted something is, if you have two faces that are designed to allow movement and the restriction of movement is pretty much only limited by how crazy animators get, the faces will eventually clip. In SL, where there are several limitations and the quality of rigging on average is all over the place, it's much better to just embrace alpha masks from the very start, and never forming any weird notions of ideality wherein simple solutions that have functioned perfectly fine for years and years should be discarded 'just because'. Even the most successful brands, who make the highest quality SL apparel, has occasional clipping issues under certain (by no means uncommon) circumstances if you don't use alphas.
