Mainland Tour (monthly guided tours on and around Mainland)

You are about to reply to a thread that has been inactive for 720 days.

Please take a moment to consider if this thread is worth bumping.

Recommended Posts

I will use this thread to announce my upcoming tours -- until I myself or participants lack of time, or lose interest. 😆

General Information about the tours

The tours will be hosted on or around (=connected to) Mainland, preferrably once a month. They are supposed to be family-friendly, so everyone is welcome.

Usually, I will try to combine (part of) my tours with one or more activities such as sailing, flying, driving, horseback riding, or similar. Which means that the tours will include a few sim crossings, therefore it is highly recommended to prepare a low lag appearance (e.g. low complexity/scripts amount) to avoid getting stuck too easily in sim borders 😁

Prior to the tour, a HUD with the flyer, a notecard with additional hints for the current tour, and the landmark to the starting point will be provided. After the tour, this HUD will be updated with the landmarks to all visited sites, and any interesting additional information so you can explore again, and find out more on your own.
In the next days, I will set up a little office where you can come by to grab the HUDs: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Erazor/56/7/65

If you can't make it in time, you are welcome to send a TP request to join the tour at a later point.

If anyone would like to join this project as a host, or make suggestions, please feel free to drop a message here, or contact me in-world.

_____________________________________________________

A lot of people asked about the tour at Campbell Coast. In collaboration with @BJoyful, I am currently figuring out an additional second tour date/time. So those who couldn't attend before, can hopefully join this time. Stay tuned, information about it will be posted in this thread as soon as possible!

Sailor's Cove is not official Mainland, however, it is part of the Mainland history when Linden Lab developed the Community Partnership Program which resulted in various sailing communities being connected with water sims to the Mainland continent Nautilus. We will be visiting the Rainforest in the south of Sailor's Cove to explore various sites.

Meeting Time & Location
Saturday, February 20, 9:00am SLT
SL Coast Guard Station @ Byron Bay
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Byron Bay/128/188/22

Requirements
None, but you can optionally prepare swimwear/Swim AO and/or snorkeling/scuba diving gear. Hints for free/cheap options are provided through the HUD.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have some exciting news for you about the upcoming Mainland Tour: LCDR Coralie Foggarty, Commanding Officer of District 3 where the Second Life Coast Guard Station of Byron Bay (our start/meeting location) is situated, just came back to me and announced that they will not only be on location to give us a little introduction about their project but will also have a little surprise ready.

I heard rumours, it might include a 🛥️ and/or a 🚁

You better don't miss this, and be there on time! B|

It has been promised, finally I could make some time! We are going to revisit Campbell Coast since a lot of people have been asking about it. However, with a very few exceptions, we will explore the sites which couldn't be considered anymore last time due to time limit. So if you have joined the previous tour, you will get to see new sites around the area. Some of them have just been added or revamped!

Meeting Time & Location
Saturday, March 13, 9:00am SLT
@ Edge Walker
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Edge Walker/181/215/64

Requirements
None! If you have a horse, feel free to bring your own. Everyone else will be able to retrieve a horse from the rezzer.

On a sidenote: to be able to provide also tour reviews (pictures+texts), or additional information, ooooor.... something like an interview coming up (hint, hint!), I set up a blog for the project which you can find here: https://yukiyesh.wixsite.com/mainlandtour

The next Mainland Tour will be on Saturday March 27, 9am SLT at the Snowlands, a subcontinent of Sansara.

One of the sites to be visited will be the ONSR. I had the chance to meet Veronica Quackenbush, one of the initiators, and she told me the whole story about it. Turned out to be an interesting piece of SL history! So I decided to bring the ONSR history into some nice form, and share it with you beforehand. Consider it an "amuse-cerveau" 😁

You can find the whole story on the Mainland Tour blog: https://yukiyesh.wixsite.com/mainlandtour/post/sl-history-the-onsr-in-the-snowlands

Also: the updated HUD with all landmarks to points of interest + additional information of the previous tour at Campbell Coast is now available at the Mainland Office.

And here is the official announcement for the next tour at the Snowlands. ^_^

The ONSR will bring us to our starting point for exploring the Alpine Routes in the Snowlands, a subcontinent at Sansara. We will pass by Chalet Linden and various other points of interest. To top it all off, we will test our skills to raft through rapids on the fjord before we finish our tour at the Winter Cove Community.

Meeting Time & Location
Saturday, March 27, 9:00am SLT
@ ONSR Okema Canyon Station
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Okemo Canyon/102/160/65

Requirements
None! However, I suggest to prepare warm clothes, and to grab the free rubberboat since it is a bit easier to steer through the rapids (I did the test!). 😉 A hint for a free rubberboat can be found in the tour HUD which is available at the Mainland Tour Office: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sunstream/46/253/65

Additional Info
If you would like to arrive to the meeting location by plane, car, snowmobile or with another vehicle, the Okemo Airfield is just next to the ONSR Okemo Canyon Train Station, as well as a snowy road (the road from the north has a dead end though!). Check the map to find your prefered optional start location.

It is time again for the next Mainland Tour ^_^

We will be travelling and exploring around Sutherland and East Coast on the continent Sansara.

You can join the optional flight from Bellisseria to Sansara already. It will take about 10 minutes. Depending on the number of participants, the optional flight will be done by plane or by mini helicopter.

The actual tour start will be at the recently opened Cannes Airport. From there, we will head over by road to La Croisette, a France Coast inspired avenue that offers various activities. Just next to it, the Abyss Observatory holds a few - and educational - surprises above and below sea level. Our trip then continues with mini helicopters to reach for the equestrian community of Moorcroft. Yes, we might be lucky to spot unicorns; this place has a touch of magic.

Meeting Time & Location
Saturday, April 24, 9:00am SLT
@ Cannes Airport, Chicagon, Sutherland, Continent: Sansara
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Chicagon/230/162/137

Optional Flight to start location at 8:45am SLT
@ Coral Waters Airfield, Continent: Bellisseria
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Coral Waters/100/150/24

Requirements
If necessary, one group slot: I have mini helicopters ready which can be set to group so that others can fly it, too. Each mini helicopter can hold a pilot and a passenger. The pilot will need to be part of either the Sister In SL, or the KuddelMuddel group. The link to the latter inworld group can be found in the tour HUD which is available at the Mainland Tour Office: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sunstream/46/253/65

I have also a horse rezzer ready but you can also bring your own horse. This needs no group.

Additional Info
Remember to strip down avatar complexity and scripts to avoid issues when region crossing, so you don't get stuck ;)

The updated HUD to replicate the tour is now available at the Mainland Tour Office, including all landmarks+additional information notecards about the visited places, as well as some more spots that you can visit along the route. Mark your calendars already for the next one that is planned for May 22, 9am SLT.

If you haven't been to any of the tours yet and want to get an idea what it looks like, here are some snapshots that I put together from our latest tour during which we also visited the equestrian Moorcroft community at the East Coast of Sansara.

Mark your calendars! Only about 1,5 weeks left until it is time again for the monthly Mainland Tour!

We will travel along the SLRR Main Line on Heterocera Atoll.

Our starting point is the headquarter of Virtual Railway Consortium (VRC) where every information you may need is offered if you wanted to become a train conductor yourself. We will have a quick look around, and then take a train ride along the SLRR Main Line. Exiting at the end of the Great Wall, we will be horseback riding along the public bridleway of the High Mountain Road. "High Mountain" is a promise because our next location, the Mount Campion National Forest, is indeed trailing around the two highest mountains in SL. Once we made it back from the summit, we will continue our way to Pavonia Station where we will hop on the train once again to head to our last station, Hiraya Town.

Meeting Time & Location
Saturday, May 22, 9:00am SLT
@ Virtual Railway Consortium, Tuliptree, Continent: Heterocera Atoll
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Tuliptree/89/155/30

Requirements & Hints

  • It is highly recommended to strip down avatar complexity and scripts to avoid region crossing issues. We don't want you to end up being stuck at a region border :D
  • A horse rezzer will be available but you are welcome to bring your own.
  • If not familiar with Teegle Horses (rezzer), here is a quick guide to make your travelling life easier: https://yukiyesh.wixsite.com/mainlandtour/teegle-horse-guide
  • The tour info HUD is also available at the Mainland Tour Office: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sunstream/46/253/65
  • The travelling parts are longer than in the previous tours, most is done by train. Therefore, please expect a length of 2 hours. If that is too long for you, you can either leave earlier, or join at a later point. All you have to do for joining later, is to send me a message / TP request.

Usually, the tours are hosted around the 20th. Which would be the upcoming weekend. However, there are so many SL community events happening/starting that I did not want to interfere with these events but instead invite all of you to go exploring these because they are part of SL, the SL history, the SL community, mainland, and so on and so forth. So here is what I would like to suggest to you to visit as a "compensation" for the cancelled Mainland Tour:

SLB18: Second Life turns 18 (wohooo finally adult) and celebrates this occasion with tons of various events. Meet Lindens & Moles, enjoy live music, visit exhibitions, go shopping. You can find info here: https://secondlife.com/destinations/sl18b

Sailstice: probably THE biggest event around sailing in SL. Exhibitions, performances, presentations, live music, cruises, races, pretty much everything you can think of to celebrate sailing & boating in SL. Find all info here: https://sailvirtual.com/?page_id=168

Next Mainland Tour will therefore be hosted in July. Enjoy the SL community events!

For the last leg of this first tour part with vehicles, we will hop into cars and ride along the coastal roads. The second part of the tour will be by foot only. Along the inner lake of Micronesia, we will stroll along its coast to visit Gion Kobu, Point West Waterfront and Santosha Islands.

Only 1,5 hours left until the journey starts once more! I snapped a quick little sneak peek! In the background, you can see the characteristic red building of Harvey Rez Zone. It is the location where our trip will start. The boat that I use here will be shared for the tour. It is actually a freebie provided by @LiliSquibb (thanks for your help!) who offers many boats for free and even full perm to support the community of (soon-to-be) sailors and boaters.

Last but not least: Don't be as forgetful as me and put on those life safety vests!

I am excited to announce that the tour has a little twist this time! Everything evolves around the topic of "vintage": historic vehicles, historic places, historic backgrounds, and hopefully, you come in historic, vintage-inspired outfits to enjoy the full immersion.
(Note: It would be awesome if you followed the dress code of 20s/30s/40s/vintage aviation apparel but I will not deny you joining the tour if you don't.)

On West Corsica, we travel in a bus along Route 11. A well-known and historic figure of Second Life is the name patron of the famous Magellan Pass: Magellan Linden, the intrepid grid explorer who has been involved in a number of new continent discoveries. From Magellan's Landing, a lovely hangout to start exploring, we will have a sneak peek at the Space & Time Museum and Gallery that documents the history of the american Sci-Fi magazine which roots go back to 1966. We will then head to Bogatanta Bay from where we take a flight in a historic plane starting at the Paradise Airfield to fly directly to the Live Concert by and with Cranston Yordstorm (Start: 11am SLT) who performs for the grand opening of Campbell Coast Aerodrome.

About the Grand Opening of Campbell Coast Aerodrome: various people who are involved in exploration-appreciated projects have joined forces to gather for this event. In no particular order, a few honorable mentions:
Boo Rojyo is not only the manager of Campbell Coast Aerodrome, he is actually the founder of the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureacracy which brought us the popular passports and visa-alike location stamps. The BBB is regularly collaborating with Linden Lab / Linden Department of Public Works / the Moles, or such well-known projects like Drivers of SL, to support grid exploration, be it by air, by sea or by land.
Cranston Yordstorm is a passionate aviator, and you can find him often flying and exploring all over the grid in his historic "Tante Ju" plane to report about locations worth visiting. He is also a keen singer and has a secret "crush" for Frank Sinatra. During one of his exploration tours, he surprised his viewers with an impromptu interlude.
Gemini Ravenwood is another avid adventurer who offered a few lovely flight tours around the Bellisserian time stamp locations, and who will be on location as well to .... wooooops... I have to stop revealing more here because I may not tell yet what surprises they have up their sleeves to make this event exciting!

Meeting Time & Location
Saturday, August 21, 9:00am SLT
@ Catmosphere Kitten Cafe, Continent: West Corsica
SURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Muskeg/182/56/48

Requirements & Hints

  • Since this tour is a Vintage Special, it would be awesome if you dressed up accordingly (theme: 20s/30s/40s/vintage aviation).
  • It is highly recommended to strip down avatar complexity and scripts to avoid region crossing issues. We don't want you to end up being stuck at a region border :D
  • You can always leave the tour earlier, or join at a later point. All you have to do for joining later, is to send me a message / TP request.
  • The tour info HUD is also available at the Mainland Tour Office: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bay City - Barnstable/41/29/26

MAINLAND TOUR is back and has joined forces for the next year with the BELLISSERIAN EMBASSY SANSARA, part of the BBB project that most know for its popular passports. While the original idea of hosted tours to explore interesting places around mainland remains, the tours will be expanded by also passing by at locations that offer a stamp to collect for BBB passport holders.

The first tour of this joint venture will start with the official Opening Ceremony at the BELLISSERIAN EMBASSY SANSARA. We will then hop on the bus for a little tour to the Snowlands. Those who have joined the last tour at the Snowlands - which happened almost a year ago! - might remember the fun we had with off-roading. While it were jeeps at the time, it is now a bus that holds up to 24 passengers. I hope, you gonna love it!

Meeting Time & Location
Wednesday, January 19, 12:00pm SLT
@ Bellisserian Embassy Sansara, Continent: Sansara

Requirements & Hints
None, however, it is highly recommended to strip down avatar complexity and scripts to avoid region crossing issues. We don't want you to end up being stuck at a region border 😁

Opening Ceremony takes ~10-15 minutes before we start the actual tour.

You can always leave the tour earlier, or join at a later point. All you have to do for joining later, is to send me a message / TP request.

The tour info HUD is available at the following locations:
@ Bellisserian Embassy Sansara
@ Blisston Village
@ Corsica Tourist Center - CSC

Wednesday is probably out for me, but I will definitely be coming on one of these tours. They sound a lot of fun. I like the idea of 24 people on a bus - and YAY we don't have to wear masks in Second Life.

I hope people will post lots of photos (is that allowed?) during and after the trip to make me very jealous at what I'm missing. Truly love to see photos, and this looks like a heap of fun.
