If one does the name change and eventually cancels their premium status do they still keep the new name?

Yes -- names are forever................. unless you change it again (but then you still also own the previous names and can revert to them by paying the fee again).

Thank you,  I couldn't find anywhere where they addressed that.  So in essence you can join for a month change your name then cancel back out before you pay another month.

I do love how they charge you for switching back to a name you already own / paid for. At the very least it should be a reduced amount such as $5 or something

Not necessarily.  If I bought a new name and then decided I wanted to switch back to LittleMe Jewell -- I never paid for that name.  I got it back in the days where everyone got a last name during signup.

I'm pretty sure the charging is to discourage lots of changing.  The name changing is hard on the back-end.
