I was born in 2006, and I have everything I owned then.

Even clothes are different now.

1. I need to figure out the changes and how to adapt in many ways

2. I have wicked vintage clothes ( some by SL Celebrities at the time, some who are no longer with us RL, and more)

3. Even my Avatar is Vintage, but I do have the BEST of 2006 - 2008 Avatars/skins ( in my tastes of course)

DOES THIS INTEREST ANYONE IN NAY WAY????

I still have a lot of that stuff in my inventory too, Dazzle, Last Call etc. Even if you update your head and body to mesh, you should be able to wear your old system layer clothing as bakes on mesh. The older skins can be worn with mesh avatars too but will lack the quality of new skins and may not fit your mesh body and head perfectly, there are fixes you can buy for problem areas though (most notably from a store called Izzie's). Most older hair does not look good now in comparison to mesh but I have kept some of the more fun stuff. Old shoes are no good if you update to mesh, and SL broke invisiprims so those shoes just all around look bad.

Here's my personal opinion:
You have a UNIQUE avatar and changing it would be a shame IMO. So if this is basically your "i have returned" announcement, then may I suggest preserving this avatar the way it is and use it indeed as a vintage avie?
If you really feel the need to update, then I would suggest creating an alt (you can have up to 5 alts per email account if I am not mistaken) and use that one from now on.

Of course, this is my personal opinion, and this would really only work if you do not have oodles of active friends or other obligations on your vintage account.
I have a vintage account myself, left to me by my ex-partner who left SL in early 2009 and I have not once even so much as changed the outfit and I enjoy showing her off every so often as a sample of what was considered good at the time 🙂

One of the things you likely haven't seen until your return is OUTFITS, a part of the Appearance panel. If you want to save your avatar, as Fritigern suggests, before you start experimenting and changing, simply save it as an Outfit. Everything that makes up your avatar as it appears will be saved into an Outfit Folder.

Outfits consist of everything that makes the avatar; skin, eyes, clothes, HUDs, attachments... everything.

Once saved you only ever need to wear that outfit to return to that look.
