I don't get the title. Where are they aiming Second Life, is it a pointy object? Or are they aiming "for" Second Life, meaning aiming to take its users / business segment? Good luck with that!

I guess SL is what they feel is the one to beat..

From the looks of this image which was in the IMVU is better than second life  comparison add they did in that link.. I think there is a good reason they didn't use any SL avatar images in it.. Because the differences would stand out to someone not knowing any better..

But someone knowing any better can see them like a sore thumb before the first blink..  Who's hands did that guy steal, what's wrong with his neck line and  what version of tomb raider is this?

hehehe

I went to the link in the OP. It's an "ad". Not a story or article. If I read that, I'd want to know more about Second Life.

I know right?  Like who is this other that you speak of?

It felt like something that would open up someones curiosity more than anything if they didn't know either of them..

The first thing that jumped out at me is all the triangles that are really noticeable, then the harder I looked you can see them all over, even in the face..

I mean our starter avatars have their own problems that are similar to that kind of thing. But can their users fix that like users have fix it in here or are they stuck with whatever mesh the world provides.. Because i know some worlds only give you certain mesh that you can mess with, but you can't upload any mesh to them, just link textures mostly from a place that you store them and not the platform store them..

The thing that makes second life so good is we can upload to our grid where a lot of these worlds can't..

I had never been there, but reading this, I signed up.

What I liked was the points/rewards/whatever you were assigned during the login process. I got about halfway through (icky graphics), but I really liked the incentivized log in. What would I get at the end????

SL, listen up and copy some of that!

It's all business spin designed to reach the SL audience because of the high numbers of people. Its akin to when Linden Lab heavily targeted the Facebook audience to boost numbers and put SL on steam to try and bring in gamers (SL is not a game. Yeah I'll keep saying it). That hasn't moved the needle much, assuming it hasn't actually hurt SL, which I think it has. But I digress on that.

They should be advertising their product, not posting random, out of thin air arguments as to why they are better than something else. This more resembles a shot fired than an advertisement in my opinion.

The more I look at that ad and how it is placed on their site the more I think it is actually aimed at their own residents, trying to convince them that IMVU is still better than S/L. That they compare S/L I think says they are noticing finally how many of their residents have or would like to make the jump in spite of the steep learning curve here. I'm noticing that their concurrency numbers have been declining the last year or so to where it must be worrying them. People moving to S/L from Imvu like I did, was in past because of their absolutely draconian attitudes towards adult content. The moral minority there made darn sure there wasn't a stiffy to be found anywhere if they had anything to do with it. Couple poses have to have safe distances between pelvises to be accepted in their catalogue and other sorts of silly bs that made the world really only fit for 12 year olds. Avatars there were better until around 2017, 2018 when Secondlife started surpassing them with rigged clothing, better heads and bodies, multi attachment points, Bom.

IMVU is hands down better for new users in their viewer usability since they have spent years tweaking it for ease of use whereas S/L has done nothing in that regard but better sexed up avatars and slex is an attraction that will win out eventually for those interested in that. Imvu also gives or at least used to give new residents a few thousand credits to get them into the shops right off. User retention goes up for the simple fact that a higher percentage of new users will at least stay long enough to spend the free money. But as those users grow up, they eventually get tired of the restrictions and community guidelines and start looking for other worlds where the adult content isn't so restrictive. S/L in that regard is the top adult Virtual world that is free to join and most like Imvu. That ad is I think an attempt to slow the egress rather than attract Second Life residents to go there.

2017 2018 for rigged mesh? Wasn't that when bento came out? More like 2013 or 2014 if I remember right..

IMVU had a rather agressive campaign targetting SL users at the time this thread was started. That was two years ago though. It didn't last long and it didn't work.

I'm not always against necroposting but it's not appropriate in this case so let's just put this thread to rest.

Thanks, I missed that it is a necropost.  That explains a little why the original post's advertisement seems so..anachronistic (even thought it was only a couple years ago).

Yes was trying to say that it was a combination of S/L avatar advancements that finally surpassed those of IMVU around 2017-2018. Before that time I would have loved to have been able to get some of my IMVU outfits and looks here.

Ya I'm sure they had some nice outfits there,  but honestly, we had a lot of good looking avatars even with system avatars and plenty of really nice content..

We had sculpties well before mesh which gave us a lot of really amazing content.. I just always remember them looking the same and having the same faces and bodies.. Do they have a limited pool of avatars to choose from?

Also, I'm wondering if they can upload mesh or limited to a certain amount of mesh to work with and have to link textures to work with the mesh catalog.. Because I know some worlds that do that, like redlight for instance..

I mean we had some pretty good system avatars as well as stuff to beat even back then.. not that I even look at both as competing, but SL pretty much was the one to beat  if there was a relationship in that aspect..

I have better images on our older hard drive, but we have to get an older computer set up to get those off of there..

This is my avatar in 2012

Then 2011

Then 2009, I did do some green screen on this one to put in the background, but other than the text, that's all the photochopping I did to it.

Very nice job @Ceka Cianci. And sooo much better than IMVU today!

How ironic (and fun) would it be if IMVU players found this thread - and moved here. Hahaha!

Honestly, I hope their world does do good and sticks around, but also doesn't stoop to dragging this world into their  save our world campaign again like they did back then.. I tried going there years ago and really only tried to get around in it for  an afternoon, that was probably over 10 years ago maybe.. So I really have no idea of what it's really like inside there other than seeing videos on youtube or images from around the net..

I used to try all the worlds out that I could find to see how they felt compared to here.. Most of them were limited in what you can do and limited on how creative you can be.. From what I've seen in doing that, user friendly always meant less that you could do as well as express.. For me being able to do those things is a huge attraction for me, where a lot are happy with user friendly.. There is nothing wrong with that at all, because it can be relaxing and nice as well..

SL is a constant road of troubleshooting most of the way, and that is what usually has many leaving more than anything at the start..

I think if worlds like that want to throw down the gauntlet, they should really put them truthfull up against each other rather than picking a drop of our bucket to compare to their bucket.. That or just don't do it at all.. hehehe

Like I said I don't know what it's like in there since the one time I tried.. I wouldn't be against giving it a try to do a much better comparison for myself.. I'm just going from what they show us on the outside.. But I figure they weren't being any better than me in doing that as well.. hehehe

Frankly imvu sucks lol in my own opinion SL is much better. At least I can walk around, fly, and even do things that I could not do on IMVU. IMVU is a chat room based and limited to many things. Creating a system is all right easier if you know your way around Blender or some 3D model app. I still connect with people through discord that are my friends from my IMVU days. IMVU is trying to make it like it's all better than SL. Which it isn't there are frequent problems with the client and community together. These days in recent years have become more attracted to teens of those underage. (Ick by the way). I shifted myself to SL for a more adult environment. The more positive community here than on IMVU will ever be. Any more people just compete on IMVU to be a top creator or top model etc. This is boring and even the negative part of the community is where the next profiles are not private and people can use your followers and following to cause problems. It made me leave the virtual community altogether.
