Yes, you must search for "Wearable" when you shop, unless you will find a rez zone that allow you to put the car on ground.

I know it is maps over rez zones and Hud's that search for them, but I can not say what you should get. I don't use them, and do not know what's good. I hope others can come with suggestions.

This is your first post, so you are likely new. I'll give you a bit more information.

Clothes and lots of things are worn by attaching them to your avatar. You have likely learned that and thought everything worked the same way. It doesn't. But your thinking was reasonable.

There are horses, cars, airplanes, and more that are meant to be worn. There are also things that are meant to be sat on, NOT worn. Sailboats that are meant to be simulations of real sailing dependent on wind and sail position are meant to be sat on. This allows scripts to control their movement. Planes, helicopters, and more are the same.

When buying you have to be able discern whether a vehicle is mean to be ridden or worn. Try the demo. If it floats over your head, it likely is meant to be ridden.

As Marianne was pointing out, the ridden, sat on, items have to be rezzed so you can sit on them. That requires a place where you have rez rights. Rez rights entice griefers to rez all sorts of annoying things. Places with rez rights for everyone are rare. Bellissirea is an exception. Rez sites are scattered all over, in streets and at light houses (for boats). You'll also find airports, GTFO transport hubs, and boat piers have free rez zones.

Look in the top menu bar at the right end of the address for the icon that telsl you if you can rez in the area. It is a cube, icon for a prim, and either does or don't have a red X or slash to indicate no rez rights.

Once you rez a vehicle, you can sit on it and drive it into a No-Rez area. Not a problem.

The other gotcha is scripts. You also have to the right to run scripts in the area. The icon looks like a little piece of paper with writing.

While it takes some looking, you can find places with rez and script rights all over SL.

Most cars are not worn.  Did the car you bought say to wear it?  Was there a notecard that came with the car the might have additional instructions on it?

Most cars you rez on the ground.  Some cars are 'boxed' so what you rez on the ground is a box you need to open,  but then after opening the box and saving it to your inventory, you would still rez the car on the ground.  Once it's rezzed if you right click it, there usually is a 'sit' or 'drive' option, which puts you in the car.

There are some 'boxed' items now, though, where you do wear the box item from inventory, and it attaches (displays) on your screen and when you click on it, the item is unpacked. I haven't seen vehicles packed in this manner, but I haven't purchased a vehicle for awhile.   When the car was over your head, did you try clicking on it, and if so, did anything happen?  Also, when the car is over your head, you should see it in the 'worn' tab of inventory, and at the end of the item's name, it will tell you which point it's attached to - if it's a HUD attachment (attached to display on your screen) it will have an attachment point like center or bottom left, or top right.

Once you have stopped wearing something, it no longer shows up in the 'worn' tab of your inventory.
