In "Preferences -> Privacy" you can check the box for "Only friends and groups know I'm online".  However, your profile would still show as online for friends. 

In your Friends list, you can turn off that friend being able to see you as online - that has to be done individually for each friend in your friends list. 

Your status in the list of members of a group, will always show you as online, when you are online - there isn't anyway to change how that displays, so anyone in the same group as you can always tell, from the members list, if you are online or not.   Any object showing online status via a script function will always show you as online when you are, as well.
