I have system hair on my avatar and I want to detach it

Simply replace it with a bald base and  wear your fave mesh hair. It is required to wear a system hair base otherwise you would be a cloud.

You cannot take off the hair item, but you can replace it with one that is just the eyebrows with no hair.  Many hair stores offer some for free and I'm pretty sure you can also get some for free on the MP.

Are there even still stores that would sell system hair items to begin with?

It should have pieces that look like the hair base icon in inventory, but not actually contain hair.

System hair is the same item as a brow. You cannot detach these kinds of system body parts, but you can replace them. Alternatively if it is modifiable, you can change the texture of a system hair or brow to a default invisible one. If you want to be silly, you could also change it to other textures. For instance, the pink satin Library texture added to a system brow can make it look like a brain inside your head - or coming out of your head if it's sticking through.

Also, if it's able to be modded, you could adjust the hair to where it is hidden in your head with the sliders.. system hair and brows have their own set of sliders like your body shape does..

here is a quick video on how to make your own brows or adjust the ones you are already wearing.

This video goes over the brows, but the but once you get into edit mode with them, there are 4 tabs.. the very first one which is for the hair you can brong all those tabs down to zero and all the hair will be inside the skull..

But the video is really good for getting you in the right area as well as also for making your own brow shapes..

create a new, slap all relevant hair sliders to 0 and you have one
eventually put a transparant texture on it ( standard in every inventory) and it wont show, but with transp texture you can get glitches with the mesh or prim hair you wear.
