Smaller is better for profile pics I think as some folks on slower connections will not be able to see a 1024 texture (FOUR times bigger than a 512) so I would advise a 512 (the uploader will resize to 512 X512 if you are close to that with your photo. Also note that because there are different VIEWERS that use different sizes for profile pics, you cannot have it look good in all. Most of us are in Firestorm so the 600 X 400 and then upload to 512 works well.

If you are intending to upload your image as a texture inworld, rather than add the pic via your "my Secondlife" page, I would suggest resizing it to 512 x 512 in your graphics program of choice before uploading.  The reason for this is that any image that isn't sized in powers of two (128, 256, 512, 1024 etc) gets compressed by the viewer to the nearest one of those sizes upon upload. And the viewer does not do that as well as a dedicated graphics browser. So if you resize it first, your image will be sharper.

RESIZE it, don't CROP it. It will look wrong when resized to square, but it will stretch out again, back to its proper proportions, in the profile.

LMGTFY - No waiting. You could have saved yourself 10 minutes.

Size matters... Scroll down to textures.

Your mug shot...

As Lewis is pointing out... but whether you use crop or resize depends on what you want in the image. The end result for uploads must be a power-of-two size to preserve quality. If you can crop an image to the upload size, do that to get better quality. Unless...

The important part of what Lewis is getting at is since Profile images, and various other images in SL, have required aspect ratios, you have to figure out the combination of steps to get the correct ratio and power-of-two size. SL is going to resize the image as it goes from stored image to display to achieve the target ratio. It can be tricky. It may require doing some math to figure it out. The goal is to avoid the SL resize on upload.

Profile images are the old style screen size 4:3 or 1024x768px. So once upon a time in the beginning of SL we didn't have to think about it.

SL is going to take that 1024x768 and squish it to 1024x512 for storage. The Display page/panel will force it back to 1024x768 by stretching it on screen much as you would stretch an image on a prim. To experiment, you can bounce over to ADITI where uploads are free and try placing the images on a prim sized to 4:3 ratio. You can upload various images and see how they work.

If you crop the Profile image from 1024x768 to the desired 1024x512 for storage the display page will still stretch it to 1024x768 and show a distorted picture. Anticipating the Display page stretching/resizing any SL stored power-of-two image for display we compensate before the upload.
