Skyboxes?! What are they, what are the functionality?

Recommended Posts

So I'm trying to understand what is the purpose of skyboxes, and what they actually are?  For instance, I've purchased one and i rezzed a black box.   When i tried to get inside nothing, could not get inside.  So I figured I bought it wrong, purchased a doozy, what ever.  So i buy another one,  this time with good reviews.  So now i rez it directly underneath me and it works.  Now i cant get out.  Windows dont actually work, wonky when i rez other objects with placement, and etc.

So what are the purpose of skyboxes, what are the functionalities that I'm missing because I don't see any, I see people selling/renting these and I ask myself why?  Help please. :D

You can always tp in and out.

Skyboxes are used to create "pocket realities" isolated from the rest of SL. Many people in SL prefer to have such a small environment where they have full control rather than have to relate to others in a larger setting. It's certainly not my idea of a virtual reality and from what you say, probably not yours either, but if that's what people want, sure, why not? There's no harm in it.

Most rental places have teleport pads to take you to a skybox.

On your own -- a couple of ways.

Rez skybox on the ground on your land and make sure it is ON your land (turn on the borders of the land so you can adjust the box as needed).

In the build menu with the skybox selected, change the Position Z amount to a number between 500 and 4000 meters (some lands have different rules so check those if you are renting).

The picture above is a skybox that is up on my building pad. It is currently at 2011 meters.  I could send it DOWN or UP from here depending on what I wanted.   Let's say I put in 1000 meters in the Z slot instead of 2011.   That would send it there where I hopefully wanted it.  THEN I could go to the map and teleport myself to say 1006 meters (needs to be more than the skybox but will vary depending on how the skybox is made).  And then I would be inside. If the teleport number is off I could try again.

The other method would be to send your skybox to its elevation, then teleport of fly NEAR it and REZ A CUBE on top of the skybox.  SIT on the cube and then lower yourself down using the building tools.

LOTS of skills are needed in SL. This is just one :D.  Good luck.

Very, very often does windows have no functionality in SL. A skybox is often black on the outside, also windows, so no one can look inside.

Some people feel more "secure" up in the sky, far away from people who walk on the ground. They do not have to look at buildings they don't like, because they live in their own little box. There is also no need to buy plants and such for a garden.

Yes, I know.... few people bother with a garden anyway.

It is hard to understand when you say that rezzing is "wonky". If you mean that the item you rez sit in the roof instead on the floor, that can happen in any building. You have not zoomed close enough to the place you will set the furniture, so I think the viewer register the roof instead of the floor.

Or maybe others have a better technological suggestion for "wonky" rezzing.

Depending on how small the box is, sometimes you think you're rezzing in front but it ends up behind you.  Also, with some mesh builds, it's impossible to rez on the floor without getting a "can't rez" warning.  I'll usually cover the floor with a prim rug to rez on.

What you should do is rez the skybox on the ground so it fits on your lot.

Then type a number into its "Z" access to shoot it up to the sky, let's say 1500.

Then go to the map, select the sim, and select "1501" as your level to TP to. That will put you inside the skybox.

Then you will need a teleporter, which you can buy from various merchants. Rez one in the skybox. Put in a channel number so that it can be locked if you like. Then type "30" into the world map to go back down to the ground, rez another teleporter, and now you can easily go to and from.

As others explain, it's to create a segregated reality that no one can enter, including yourself -- until you use the teleporter.

A shortcut for typing altitude into map is...fly then type in local chat.. gth1501 (go to height)....just an fyi.

I laid a trap for you, Rowan, and you missed it, and now I've already corrected it.

And this thing you're saying applies to Firestorm, it is not a command recognized by the SL viewer.

Dang it should be!  I use that and rezplat all the time.  I wonder why it hasn't been implemented in the official viewer.

Linden Lab should hire Firestorm to make the official viewer.

I think it is even better to stand in your skybox and go to world and "Set home to here". Every time you click Home or log into Home you go in the skybox. A teleporter on the ground is like an invitation for people wandering around.

Unless you have a building or a garden on the ground and need to go up and down yourself.

The teleporters can be locked, and people don't want to stay in their skyboxes only.

I have some adjacent parcels in a mainland region, a home parcel and across the public road a studio/stable parcel. Today I bought and installed a skybox 2000 m above my home parcel. Once set up, I saw that at 1000 m there is a huge domed area that covers part of my home parcel and all of my Studio/Stable parcel across the public road.

Is it legal for that person to be covering my parcels?

No although not sure how something would remain on public land without eventually being returned.

Thanks. I wondered the same thing myself. I have a walkway I rezzed up to the main road making sure the centerpoint was on my property; it took quite a bit of tweaking to get it right so it wasn't returned.

Here's a screenshot of the parcels in question. My parcels are highlighted in blue, the skydome prim covers the dark area with red circles at the corners.

Whom do I contact to get this dome moved?

Find out who it belongs to first and ask them to remove it.  Are the prims showing on your land?  If so, that should tell you who it belongs to.  If they don't get back.to you or remove it, you can report them or try to return it yourself if it's impacting your prim usage.

I don't know if it's the case any more but there was a time in the last year or two when even if another persons object was just in the is it, isn't it encroaching on your land territory you could right click and return it. if an IM or notecard to the object owner doesn't work you could try it

Looks like a megaprim. They only take up LI on the parcel where their center is, even if they visually overlap with other (even multiple) parcels.

Filing an Abuse Report (Land > Enroachment > Objects or textures) should get a member of the Governance team to come clean it up if the owner won't cooperate.

I would take a moment to consider how much it's actually affecting you. You're absolutely within your rights to have it removed and that person is not entitled to anyone else's airspace, but if it's not interfering with anything you're doing, you could let it be for now.

Thanks to all for the replies.

I was able to return the megaprim - what remained was a small lot with a house and yard, none of which impinge on my property.

Wulfie, at the moment it is not effecting my visual airspace, that is I cannot see it from the ground nor from my skybox at 2000 m. However I plan additional development at 1000 m and 1500 m in the future and it's probably best to get it resolved now.

Cheers.

The megaprim does seem excessively large, but if it was one object (which it would seem to be as you returned it) then it wouldn't have been impacting on your prim allowance.

You might want to consider if you would want to be using something like that in future yourself, they are commonly sold and used to provide an attractive setting for builds in the sky. This one did seem excessively large, but a routine no tolerance policy is likely to be reciprocated and end up with them returning anything of yours that encroaches on their parcel. It is much healthier to try to talk with them about it and come to a common understanding that maximises both your options for enjoying your parcels rather than defaulting to the minimum you can achieve by returning everything because you can.

Many set up a phantom surround with an image of landscape, a cityscape et cetera.

I do not care about it as long as it is not in my way. If somebody returned such a phanthom surround to me, I would just think o.k. but not be forthcoming if the other person asked something of me.

It is not "allowed" to make a walkway, driveway out to the road from resident land and over protected land next to the road either, but it is done all the time and if it is done well, it looks great.

I would agree with you if it was only extending a bit into other areas.  However, in looking at the picture posted, the owner of that megaprim had it extending over many other parcels. IMO, that is abusing the system a bit too much.

OO/T On skybox placement: I rezz them on the ground to make sure they are not infringing on neighbor's property, configure a teleport there, then 'ride' the skybox up to the altitude I want. Then I place a second teleport on the floor of the skybox, and coordinate it with the ground teleport.

I have a small plot on a Mainland area where (so far) the residences are not too close together, but when I rode my skybox up to its current position I found that I have more neighbors in the sky than on the ground. Sometimes I'm amazed at the things I find up in the sky - most often I find forgotten pieces of construction projects, but once I found a traffic sign.*

*Why I build in a Sandbox - misplacing a decimal point can cause your project to end up too long, too tall, or far away. At least in a Sandbox, if you type Z3000 instead of Z3.0 it should be returned**

**although I try to remember to use 'pathfinder' to check my area after building in a sandbox.
