"Giver" issue

I recently received a drink giver tray.  When attempting to detach the temporary drink attachment, I received a pop up stating that mesh items could not be dropped and had to be detached directly to inventory. How do you do this. Since the drink itself was not part of inventory. but part of the "giver"?

Right click on the actual drink and choose detach

When an item gives you something, that object is no longer part of the "giver" object, but its own separate object.  If you're wearing (holding) it, just right click it and choose Detach.
