Question

in lieu of full region sales fully opening up again, i have a question about naming them -

in the rules about naming private regions, it says:

  • A name which violates any trademark right, copyright, or other proprietary right.

however, what if i wanted to name a region after something that is not copyrighted? outlining the situation a bit more:

  • the name is of a fictional land that is not copyrighted, the source is generally considered public domain
  • the creator is explicitly okay with others using their fictional land's name in other endeavors (there have been third party published for-profit using the name, for example)

however, it still is an existing fictional entity that is known of. would naming a region after it be alright?

As long as the name itself is not trademarked or otherwise legally bound, yes.  So don't use "Disneyland" (the mouse's lawyers are really stern), but something like "Emerald City" or "La La Land" are fair game.  If you are in real doubt, you should use the Internet to do a trademark search.

EDIT:  You can also save yourself a lot of time by looking on gridsurvey.com to see whether the name has ever been used for a SL region before. Many obvious names have long since been used by other people, but a surprising number of names haven't been.

cool, thanks :0! i have another question if you don't mind, about the gridsurvey website - i searched the region name there and found it was last online in 2009 (but now ceases to exist)

would i still be able to use that name for a region? i remember back when land sales were open i tested the name and it was available

account names, groups are "once used, never available"

[edit ... you can always name your parcel different than the region where is it's on ..even when it's regionwide]

for regions there's only these rules ( in this case i think the first line is important.. so if there's no region with the name you want, it should be available. To be sure, use the map search if it's not in use,, not only 3rd party websites)
