Hi. The Second Life viewer allows my avatar to speak using my computer's microphone. The exact same settings in the Firestorm (v 6.3.9) viewer puts the "voice dot" over my head, but my voice isn't heard. It seems like a microphone activation issue. I opened preferences and changed the mic activation from "middle mouse" to another key (used z) but still no voice. I went to the Firestorm wiki and the instructions there mimic the settings I already have in place. Tried different mics on the off chance but still no voice. Any ideas why voice works normally for me in the SL viewer but not in Firestorm?

Try the Firestorm support group while in-world. This sort of thing tends to take some hand-holding to fix.

Sadly, the Firestorm Support group just pointed me back to the Firestorm Wiki page I linked above. Guess I'll be doing videos in the SL viewer.

I had a fun time getting voice working again with my Linux system after a breakdown. Not quite a new install, but close. Along the way, I noticed that the page the OP gave a link to is only the first step, the basic settings that should work. There is a link to the trouble-shooting page, but as a design choice I would have given it a bit more prominence, not a couple of highlighted words in a block of text,

The troubleshooting page is Firestorm Voice troubleshooting

It has specific instructions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. In Linux there are some fairly specific driver needs. Not for the first time, I wonder how ancient some of the kludges in viewers are getting.

Those fairly specific driver needs are also Distribution specific - something that page itself even notes.

For the distro I use, it did not require much more than grabbing a package and installing it. Mind, between Firestorm and my other programs I already had everything it needed to run and to use Voice - without needing to symbolic link any of the drivers to Firestorm (with the drivers pretending to be their older counterparts).

I know Linux makes the whole business tricky, because of what Vivox chooses to do. I have seen, a couple of times this weekend, error messages about SLVoice.exe unexpectedly closing. I am not sure if that message is sent from Vivox, Linden Lab, or generated locally by an obscure error-handler that uses an unchanged Windows filename.

Point is, SLVoice seems to be having a bad weekend for some reason. But I think I shall stick with a viewer that can use a colour scheme which gives me decent contrast on text.
