Robberinthemuseum Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 I was in a moderate level public sandbox the other day editing my avatar's appearance. Is it okay to do this? Well apparently I wasn't alone because I suddenly found myself trapped in a cage and shot up into the sky with another player messaging me that I was a pervert (my avatar doesn't even have genitals), and how DARE I edit my appearance in a public sandbox...disgusting. Is this normal? Also, where are players supposed to edit their avatar's appearance if not in a public sandbox 🤔?

Suggest that you find one that is quite isolated. Find rez zones in the Search. keyword: Linden Rez Zone 2 1
Robberinthemuseum Posted October 18, 2020 Author Posted October 18, 2020 Thank you, I'm a noob so I thought maybe I misunderstood. Thanks for straightening me out ^^ 1
Marianne Little Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 You are probably using the default viewer? I am using Firestorm, that has some interesting chat commands. In a sandbox, you may want to get out the way of peoples eyes. Type "gth 2000" or any number in the chat bar, and you are teleported up to the height you have typed in. You are falling now, but type in "rezplat" and a solid plywood platform is rezzed under your feet. 2 6

Well - it's SL - there is a fair amount of idiots around - so yes - quite normal. 😁 If you sit on ground nothing will move you around. You'll behave like a solid block of concrete. If griefing was not allowed in that sandbox then you can AR any offender. Don't expect that anything will happen instantly though. 2
Indy Melody Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 (edited) Hello and Welcome to SL! I would like to share with you and other newbies this Landmark: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Uli/93/22/33 I have four small parcels set up as changing rooms. They are set with a 5 minute auto return so you can rez out boxes to open, a pose stand and as long as you are the only one on that parcel, no one can see you. It is also located close to the New Citizens Area which is helpful to new SL'ers. Hope this will be helpful for you and other newbies. Edited October 18, 2020 by Indy Melody Added Picture 9 1

Thanks for straightening me out ^^ No. No no no no no. You are NOT a noob. You are new to the game, thus making you a newbie. A noob is a pejorative term for someone prone to boorish behavior -- the best example being experienced players who harass new players. What's more, you've now had your first official encounter with a Second Life twit, meaning that you've "leveled up", as it were, beyond being a newbie. Because you haven't really played Second Life until you've met a few idiots. Way back before I had my own land I used to fly way out to the edge of the world, go underwater, and do all my clothing changes there. This was back when editing one's appearance was a cinch. That worked well until the day I logged in and found the Linden land ocean in that region had been converted into actual land -- I was underneath someone's house lol 2 3
Rabid Cheetah Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 Oh, hey wait -- you were at a sandbox...so build a changing hut for yourself, some privacy walls. Rez a box, stretch it a bit, make it hollow, and then fly up and over to get in it.

OK, @Nova Convair, right here is an example of the constant learning that goes on in this game, a way in which even experienced players are new: I've been playing SL for over 14 years and never new about Firestorm command lines until JUST NOW. You learn something every day in Second Life. 🙂 Thanks @Marianne Little for these great tips! 1

I use this all the time but just to add to what @Marianne Littlesaid, Fly first before hitting gth 2000 or you'll end up falling back down. Been there, done that.
Fay Starlight Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 I have been griefed in sandboxes---it happens. You can report them, block them, and or TP outta there!

Find rez zones in the Search. keyword: Linden Rez Zone Or they can search directly for fitting rooms / dressing rooms, also freebie stores, as the large ones have dressing rooms. It offers more privacy than a sandbox or any random rez zone, and won't annoy anyone. Especially giving such advice to go to vehicle rez zones to rez random stuff and edit appearance is the worst idea, that's how you can annoy the most people, and that's what the OP wanted to avoid. @Robberinthemuseum If you use the keywords "dressing room" in the inworld Search on the Places tab, it will give more than 20 options right away where you should be able to change clothes / edit appearance without any issues anytime. 1
AdminGirl Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 As long as you're not standing around or rezzing stuff in the middle of the road, using rez zones is fine. That's what they're there for. Just find a spot on the side of the road. That's what I do.

They usually just stand in the middle of the road, and rez the boxes on the middle of the road, which can block it until autoreturn gets it. The whole idea is flawed, as the road and waterway rez zones are to rez vehicles, not clothing boxes. Sure, the minority that manages to stay in the bushes on the roadsides is fine. Yet I can't see the point of such a suggestion, when there are publicly available free dressing rooms that you can easily find with the Search function. 1
Rabid Cheetah Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Depends on traffic: Are there a ton of people around, or is it *cricket sound*-ville? Also, what's the auto-return? And how big is the object left behind? A 1 m3 cube on a 1-minute return zone -- no big deal. A max-size super-twisted physical torus with a rotation script on a 30-minute return zone -- that's a problem.
Rowan Amore Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I used to go to Skybeam. They had their regular sandbox area but also a Set Home Here area off to one side away from the sandbox. I never once had any problems there. 1
