Went to the gallery - items are marked for sale, but don't seem to have prices (yet?)

Can't imagine the photographer is giving away this work - may have been a mistake on their side. If that changes I'll repost

I guess an art gallery would be more than welcome, but if it turns out to be a commercial activity, then it is clearly agains the TOS, unless the art is to be purchased somewhere else and not inside the gallery

There have been a few art galleries in Belli for "show" and not for sale.   But against commercialism is indeed against the land covenant for Belli.   I have a completely free art gallery and outside art park where paintings are for sale (not in Belli), so the owner may indeed be planning on selling them for $0.   Not unheard of.

If this was Hoot Suite Gallery in Ruthsberg Region, the art is a gift. 10 pieces are set to L$0 to celebrate the new Body Positive series by artist Skip Staheli.
❤️❤️❤️ I thought it was just for the Opening Day but maybe he left them up as the Region was full during that Event.

Thanks @Chic Aeon and @Elena Core for helping me understand by your clarifications.

When I first went in, I saw some for sale and some not so was confused what the intent was. Then, I clicked on the for sale items and indeed they were set to $0.

I'm surprised someone would give away that many pieces gratis, but it's nice gesture.

FYI - I purposely did not mention the name/region since we've had many post here naming/shaming and I learned my lesson on that so I refrain. It was not to bring attention to whom or where, other than it being Belli and whether or not it would be allowed if it was for monetary gain.

And are those Flickr groups marked as creative commons?    NOT good to download and use photo that are not yours. Just saying.

I clicked on a few groups and photos in groups and they were tagged "all rights reserved" :D

An art gallery is a place that displays art for sale.  An art museum is a place that displays art for public viewing.  It may have patrons, memberships, and an admission fee, but the intent is still to offer art to the masses, for free.

Those are real world distinctions.  In Second Life, both types of art displays are fine on the Mainland or private sims (provided no TOS violations for content); Only an art museum would be OK in Belliseria due to the noncommercial provisions of the covenant.

"Selling" for zero dollars wouldn't constitute commercial activity.  Glad to hear there are places giving away stuff for free.  This would mean that despite calling themselves a gallery, they're really a museum.

Once I've completed my Bellisseria Museum of Pixelated Art, I plan to include a a gift shop.  So far the only freebie I've got set up is for the free mesh clothes I'm giving away:

The ban on commerce in Bellisseria isn't about capitalism / profit. But about commerce. They want it a place of community, not of shopping and trading. I suspect that a shop who's wares are all $0 would therefore still be an issue.

Yes, I think it would, because it's intended just to for shopping.  For me, it's a matter of purpose.  OTOH, the purpose of an art gallery is not to give things away, it is to create a nice outing for people who like to see art.  Usually the venue & the way in which it is displayed is as important as the art itself.   If some of the art is also given away,  I sure wouldn't AR it.

So if someone creates a place that presents itself as Maddy's Gift Shop where everything is free, or puts out a gacha yard sale where everything is free,  the commerce is the POINT, so I'd be a little frowny.

As in everything requiring a judgement call, it's easy to come up with cases that are headscratchers.  What if someone gets a log home right next to the lighthouse the moles just put on Logland's south coast, and decides to make it an RP visitor's center?  One room could easily house a 'gift shop', with Belli maps, postcards you can put a message on and deposit in a "mailbox" to send to another avatar, a faux history of the lighthouse, and linen towels with a drawing of the lighthouse on them ... all free.  To me, that would be good RP fun, and I would get frowny if folks objected to it.

[This occurred to me because I've often thought the little buildings that are usually part of the moles' lighthouses should be a special kind of Belli home to be claimed, or maybe offered for lease at RFL.]

Well, I don't know about the other museum, but mine's certainly not a shop.  It's an art museum, with many objects, only a few of which are in the gift shop for zero dollars.  I've seen other folks, just plain homes, with items giving stuff away.  I'm not aware of any other method for giving stuff away other than setting the price to zero.  I'm of the opinion that Abnor's responses to the GTFO thread make it clear that you can indeed roleplay commerce, and that the covenant IS about profit.

You can set up a scripted object to give out items when clicked, but that's obviously more of a faff and adds unnecessarily to server load. Either way, I have no issues with people 'selling' free stuff (I love free stuff!) as long as it's decent quality and in theme. If I saw someone had set up a freebie warehouse full of 2000s-era stuff in their front yard I would 100% AR that as being out of theme, but if they've just got a little table of unwanted gachas they're giving away that seems to me perfectly feasible in a suburban setting (especially if there's a cute sign).

A few folks I know could use an outfit like this.
