Hey! Rookie her trying to work my way to making clothing. I think i bit off more than i could chew.Ā šŸ˜…
So its in the title, tried to make a french maid outfit, and im struggling with the skirt. Big problem is trying to achieve the bell shape like this.Ā nazar-noschenko-2.jpg?1484595224

But I'm not anywhere close onĀ mineĀ unknown.png

Ā

I've tried

  • changing the fabric type
  • three patterns types
  • changing the gravity
  • changing the density
  • adjusting shear

But still nothing. anybody got any tips?

The shape is impossible to achieve with cloth alone. Even in real life. What was done in the example inage, was they imported a secondary mesh that has the bell shape, made invisible. When they do the draping, both the avatar and the bell shaped mesh will be active physics objects to shape the clothing.

Thanks, that helps figuring out the odd ramping effect is saw when i tracked down the video for the garmentĀ  Now if you don't mind me taking a bit more of your time, they seem to be able to get a very precise set of ruffles in her dress, is that done with internal lines?

You can`t use same measurements as they did cause of different avatar, the inner hole or skirt pattern is supposed to be avatar waistline+2-5 cm (if you`reĀ  using metric system and realistic human sizing)...Grain direction and density play a huge role as well, fabric type matters too. Even overall size can affect how it looks, for instance, if your avatar is cca 2m and tutorial avatar is 4m and you pick same density and same textile preset, they will have finer folds...It is ok to use density at 20 while working so simulation runsĀ faster, but to get better folds, lower to 10, HOWEVER, DO NOTĀ import such dense mesh into SL, that would be a serious overkill...you`re supposed to fine tune your MD mesh in i.e. z-brush, create a low poly model and finally bake normals from Ā high poly to low poly model! This way you have clean optimized mesh but also all the fine details/folds etc...

As Nomius mentioned, yes. They are using internal lines with fold settings to achieve this effect.Ā

So i did *finally* get the sim to give me the shape, the next issue is the gathering. I've been playing around with the fold angle, but i can't seem to make it so the skirt "poofs" correctly where it isnt folded. I tried messing with each of the setting for the sim independently, though i'm not quite making progress as of yet.Ā

if any of the above alterations to your design result in "nothing" i would suggest there is something seriously wrong with your program.

I should have been more clear at that point, i meant that it wasn't getting closer šŸ˜…

For such elaborate piece, it is important to have an accurate pattern, idk why ppl keep ignoring this...You need to have correct measurements of the avatar used and derive from that, starting with the waistline cause current result has little to do with the reference and for the reason I stated in my previous post. (the waist hole is waaay too large+skirt is much shorter)....There are times when internal lines/cuts are needed, but this skirt is not one of them...with internal lines, you are supposed to actually cut and saw,Ā  V shape (i.e. skirt waist, pants waist, side boob etc)Ā or romboid shape (i.e. shirts, jackets) to accentuate waistline and finally a simpleĀ  straight cut and saw to make the fold more crisp (i.e. plisse skirts), reference creator uses this for the sleeve ruffle...speaking of sleeves, there is excess fabric in the armpit area, when creating the pattern (especially form fitting), make the upside down U (top part of the sleeve that connects to the shoulder)Ā more prominent., also sleeve pattern is asymmetric, again, it needs accurate measurements and doing some simple math..Best to google patterns to see what is important..Anyways, your problem is 99% caused by bad pattern and remaining 1% you did not add apron yet, it clearly pushes everything together...

Here is a good channelĀ Lori GriffithsĀ ,unlike others, she`s teaching ppl to understand patterns and use that knowledge in their MD projects...

Fair enough, If my foundation is off then the rest ain't gonna work. I didn't put a lot into the top though, i just wanted to make it so i wasn't posting her in just her bra over and over again. šŸ˜…

I'll retry tonight with a more measured approached, and work on the way up from scratch. It has been a bit of a trip as i have posted this question in a few discords ad well as here, and I've been informed of 5 ways to skin this cat.
