I think there is probably an initial "attraction", so to speak, of who you are drawn to, because let's face it, we're shallow!  But it does take more than pretty pixels to keep interest and maintain any kind of relationship.  If someone looks amazing, but cannot hold a conversation, or has the personality of a wet noodle, or is just a twerp, I don't see a friendship lasting.

Interesting topic. I think it definitely does. I have tried different looks before and they have attracted different people and conversations. I think people respond to other people's looks by assuming that person's interests (or something else) or purely because they like the look. That in turn could influence who you become friends with.

What are your differing views?

I find I become friends with people in SL because of our conversations. I don't always like their AV. I'm not really into my best friend's inworld appearance, but I love our friendship. But yet sometimes I approach people because I like their AV, and become friends because of that.

Our AV's definitely reflect ourselves though. And I think we do tend to choose others as friends who we find attractive. A creepy or frightening AV definitely shows something.

Since we are talking only about friends if you have a good sense of humor (not idiotic) and an average IQ level you can look like mini mouse or daffy duck and i 'll still be cool with it but i do get bored very easily with those who are over dramatic about their avatar. (*i need to go home to try these pants, somebody pushed me and such stuff)

Mini Mouse and Daffy duck are attractive characters though. Again it goes back to my original question.

Since my reason for messaging most people is something I've read in their profile, how they look is not important. I enjoy having random conversations with just about anyone and about anything.  If I were looking for anything more, how they look would be a factor but as Jordan said, if the personality isn't there, it doesnt matter how good you look.  On the flip side, if someone messages me, the first thing I do is open their profile and give it a quick read.  If it's mostly empty with a lot of sex groups chances are it won't go well.

By using those i mean fantasy and not necessarily human looking characters.

For some of us it is.

Sure but as long as someone doesn't know who/what the other person really is those are only assumptions.

I don't mean physically. Our AV's are a reflection of our personalities. Or am I misunderstanding???

Ok i will try to explain with a simple example. I can make a good looking female avatar and come to your place and work as an escort to make money (i know a man who does that and he is straight). People will make assumptions based on my Online personality and of course the avatar that i made by looking at a few blogs, would anyone know my real personality? Of course not.

We can't hide our actual RL personalities, no matter what AV we use. It will eventually be noticeable. People make assumptions based on our online persona.

Maybe a very small part of our personality.  What we say, how we act and how we interact with others are how we learn about someone's personality.  Even then, you only see what people want you to see. The introvert in real life may be quite the opposite in sl.  How you look is simply that....how you WANT to look.  If I were a furry in sl, I can't imagine what anyone would assume about my personality.

I'm with Nick on this one.  I don't think it really does.  A lot of people are horrible and mean and enjoy griefing and abusing people just because they are hiding behind an avatar and keyboard.  If this is who they are, this is their RL personality...well yikes!!

And you just confirmed my point. That's what i was trying to say.

Okay we agree on this.  I am still trying to understand what your thought was in equating how our avi's look to our personality.

Some of the most hot and gorgeous avi's I know are completely trash people - they hurt people, use and abuse people.  Then you have the ones who may not have the most amazing avi's who are awesome people.

Then there is my SL daughter who looks so sweet and innocent, and is evil incarnate!!!!  She's adopted!

The part I disagree with is that we tend to choose others as friends who we find attractive.  For me, how they look is irrelevant as far as friendship goes.

Years ago I told my best friend her avi looked like Caitlyn Jenner - pre-photoshopping.   She kept talking to me.

I can't disagree with you, because I haven't run into that. I can only refer to myself and my friends. Those people are truly fake then, and have no business being in SL. I have no patience for anyone abusive, and I have made it very clear here in the forums, but much more "clear": inworld!!!

I have met some with truly creepy AV's. Stuff that RL scares me.
