Offensive Display Names

Question

I was surprised, and appalled to find that LL had allowed a very offensive display name. With all the attention paid to decency in Second Life, and acknowledging that people are able to do what they like in private, a display name can be seen by anyone who has display names enabled, and this includes children, but even adults who would find certain names offensive to common decency. I was sailing in the region of the Blake Sea and my radar displayed the name of a person I had come within chat range of. in 11 years of Second Life I can say I've never seen such a blatantly offensive display name and I didn't even expect it was possible. Are display names not vetted and passed for decency or otherwise offensive material? This name offends me so much I don't even want to see it in my question. Can someone tell me where I should report this as I have not been able to find a report which seemed appropriate.

Next time you see a name like that, file an abuse report on the person. It's the only thing you can do.

If you plan on submitting an Abuse Report, be sure to include the name of the alleged violator and the time and place where you encountered the behavior.  It helps if you have a photo  that shows the context, but that's not required.  For your own future reference, take a look at the Content Guidelines at https://www.lindenlab.com/legal/content-guidelines to get a feel for where the boundaries of acceptable behavior are.

LL does not "vet" either user names or Display Names.  However, they do investigate Abuse Reports by residents.

If you're offended by someone's name, report it.

I have occasionally encountered a brand new person who has made an unfortunate choice of name, for one reason or another.  I always try to discuss it with them first, in a polite and non-threatening manner, and suggest that they delete that account and create another, with a name that they (and everyone around them) can live with.

@Axel - at the moment I am a premium member but I plan to relinquish this when the term is up. I'm not going to take the trouble to report this since I don't know the person and I've only been in the vicinity en passant whilst sailing. I was just surprised to find that a person can choose any old vulgar or offensive display name with the standard that LL purports to uphold without it being either disallowed by LL or challenged by others who come into contact with this person on a regular basis. This post was mainly posted through my curiosity. Thank you all for replying :)

I did laugh a bit with that because we all know that talking about decency in SL is like talking about virginity in the Red Light District.

Display names and Group role names can be anything even vulgar, if you find it offensive report it and maybe if it's the n***** word it might be removed otherwise don't expect much.. Also you could be in a G-Rated region and someones profile looking like some kind of Virtual or even Real Porn magazine. These things are common in SL.

Out of curiosity, was their name in plain text or were they using fancy symbols at all? I remember once I tried to have the DN "Lucky Gamble" for an RP character but the change refused to go through because of the word "gamble." So I always assumed there was at least a basic lexicon of disallowed words. 😮

@ Dragon Hijinks - it was nothing as decent as Lucky Gamble. It was indecent and offensive to say the least. In fact, I have had to sail past that person again and though I didn't actually get within chat range the name showed up in my mDash radar. Well at least I don't have to see it most of the time but still surprised it was allowed to go through.

If your account is basic, all recovery will go to waste! This is my experience as a basic account! Many years ago SL became a mess and a symbol of freedom ... freedom that can pass over whoever is in front of you! Whoever complains is just a bore! But if it's Premium ...

What the heck are you talking about?

I'm surprised that you'd quit SL over this, rather than go to the relatively minor trouble of submitting an Abuse Report.

@Lindal Kidd You misread my post. My decision to relinquish premium membership was taken months ago and has nothing to do with this matter. I mentioned it only in reply to Axel's comment. It also doesn't mean I will leave SL. I tried premium and it doesn't  suit me so as soon as my year is out I'm stopping it and continuing like before as a basic account.
