So if people were discussing needing a landscaper and I mentioned I would be willing to be hired for this service would you think I'd done something wrong?

That is a very good question. I think we all agree that helpful posts with solutions to somebody's problem are great. And I think we all (including the moderators) agree using the forum to promote your SL business is not so great.

But what if the solution to the problem is found in your store? I can't imagien there is a definite answer but it's certianly something that could and should be discussed.

I'm sure 5 months of making a half-decent avi and soliciting sex was very taxing . . . Especially with all that typing 'I'm an escort' all over.

I don't see anything terribly wrong with this, unless it happens often.  The same thing happens now and then on the Nextdoor social network, where advertising outside of the "Recommendations" or "Business" sections is not allowed.  Moderators generally let it stand, altho sometimes they post to remind folks that they have the option to direct message anyone who is looking for a service they provide, instead of posting.

This is such an interesting question. I think there are some nuances to the issue?

Amina's point about that one particular post is, I think, pretty valid. When someone posts looking for one thing, and you offer another, at a cost, that looks a lot like advertising.

Overall, though, I don't think Pearl's continual (and for some, yes, tiring) references to herself as an escort are really about advertising.

Having read most of her posts here, and met her briefly once in-world, my own sense is that Pearl's status -- her "profession" if you like -- as a sex worker is an absolutely integral element of her identity in SL -- just as, for instance, someone who is a furry or a sub or a Gorean whatever might feel that that is central to understanding who they are. It just so happens that, in this instance, that particular identity involves, indeed, is actually defined by, getting paid.

I've known a fair number of strippers and prostitutes in SL. Of those, I knew exactly one who was a sex worker primarily for the money -- and she used it to promote her phone sex business, which was where she really made her (RL) cash. Most of the sex workers here I've known do it because it's a thrill, or a fantasy, or some other reason that was about their identity.

Equating a sex worker in SL with a landscaper is maybe a bit of a red herring in that sense. We might well all know someone who chooses to RP sex work. Do you know anyone who RPs being a landscaper?

Yes, OP, you advertise, constantly, knowingly, while pretending it's not. I mean it's not hard for even the most English language challenged to see, it's right there, in text, VERY obvious, I'm not sure why you think it's so subtle. You're not acting as if it's simply a hobby, it's part of who you are, it is who you are.  I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, and not knocking you for doing it, but it's there, in most of the posts you make. I see no reason whatsoever to not own what you post, what you share, and, in this context, what you advertise. You're so fixated on it being your identity (and good on you if it is, I'm not judging that, at ALL) that you seem to think it needs to be part of every conversation you join, and also seem to be under the impression that everyone here on the forums not only HAS to understand this (MUST really) but must accept it as being perfectly kosher for you, while advertising for pretty much anyone else outside of advertising areas is taboo.. Yes, people have been admonished for mentioning their businesses, their wares, too much in the forums in places where they really ought not to. Even indirect, or seemingly so, advertising, is still advertising. A one of won't get you a handslap, even a few off might not, but continued, yeah, you're gonna miff someone.  Most people aren't going to get away with it as easily or by simply saying "it's who I am", especially when it's very clear that its more than just that, it's your actual business

People have gotten snark, and worse, from others here on the forums and former incarnations of such, for far less annoying things. So, take it with a grain of salt, tone down the constant need to tell everyone what you do for a living in sl, and enjoy the forums. The more you annoy people by constantly mentioning the escorting (and yes, you make a sl living off it, it's a business, it's advertising, you can hem and haw about that all you want, doesn't changes facts, lol same as our sigs are advertisements, we own that, we know we're advertising, when we mention things we make or businesses we have in sl, we're also advertising....), the more people are going to point out that you should knock it off, and the less amount of "customers" you're going to find in sl. In fact, I'd venture a guess that people who do know others looking for such services will add you to the various lists they have, or have had passed to them over the years, of people to avoid. It's one of those sorts of professions where if you need to advertise it outside of its scope or areas wherein people would look for such advertisements, it's likely to give folks the message that you're not very good at it. So your goal of being Jenna is going to be missed, by miles and miles, if it keeps up.

Also, no one really needed this thread for "clarification" or "clearing the air", lol, that's just ridiculous. No one here asked for it, no one here hinted that it was necessary, no one suggested you needed to...so, it's going to read, even to some of those who seem to be supporting you, as a means of advertising. It's gonna backfire, I bet.

You love what you do and you do what you love, and that's awesome....you still can't advertise it everywhere without eventually annoying someone. So, a suggestion, put it in your sig. Then you've advertised and don't need to bring it up in all your posts, it kills two birds with one stone and only those who CHOOSE to see sigs can see it. It doesn't violate the guidelines (I don't believe, might want to double check that part), and it isn't likely to bother anyone else at all, or make you seem desperate (not saying I think you are, just saying that's a likely conclusion for some folks).

I like how you've defended Bagnu here -- I agree that she's not advertising, but I'm not sure I agree with some of the other definitions you're using.

Being a landscaper is only a red herring if you've created a specious dichotomy (not saying you did this intentionally or deceptively though).  There's no need to assign the characteristic of 'roleplaying' to someone who is being a virtual escort -- they are not roleplaying an escort, instead they are being a virtual escort. Their task is not different from others engaged in virtual money-earning endeavors in SL. Anything we do in SL simply represents a RL counterpart and is not a game only because the activity is done virtually, although any endeavor in SL could be part of a roleplaying environment.

Functioning as a creator is as much a part of my identity as functioning as an escort seems to be for Pearl. Identity is much more central to the self, it's a role one has taken on which feels important to the core of the self, and not a characteristic easily tossed away like a character in a play (as would be the case in roleplaying). Bagnu has described learning a lot about herself and others in her escort role, which is a primary reason why I  also assign it more importance than simply roleplaying would imply.

I don't see it as advertising, and it doesn't bother me.

I have frequently talked about experiences I've had in SL as a creator, so why can't she talk about her experiences as an escort?

Click on your name in the upper right of this page, then pull down to "Account Settings". Over on the left side of the resulting page, under "Settings", you'll find "Signature". Click on that. Now you'll see the page where you can create your signature, just as you create a forum post.

Well, it certainly could be discussed. But if someone needed a complete full design for their sky, taking up an entire sim, and I could not say "hey, I've got this great nature environment that I think might work for you", I would probably leave the forum.  It would feel too restrictive -- it would take away too much of who I am if I had to keep my mouth shut.  Now I understand if this happened every day it would be a problem, but it never would, and honestly I'd only feel like offering my solution if it was an item someone needed that felt very important to me, as my full sims do.

Because she isn't talking about her experiences as an escort.  It's the constant "I'm an escort" dropped into pretty much EVERYTHING.  Thread about renting a skybox - "I'm an escort".  Thread about Alts - "I'm an escort".  It comes across as trolling for attention, clients and rather shallow and obnoxious.   Her excuse of "I'm new and this is all I know" is getting old too.

I'm an event manager, blogger manager, and blogger, and as a hermit workaholic, these are pretty much my SL identity.  I don't go into threads and announce "I'm a blogger!" all over the place unless its a thread where it's appropriate - ie like I did in a thread about fashion photography.

Well Jordan I could be wrong, but I don't think she's advertising -- I think being an escort is very central to her identity at this point in time, and she's just wanting people to accept her as an escort. I think she wants affirmation.  I mean there's not a lot of forums you can go to and be accepted for being an escort.

It's been commented on, not just by me, but others as well, that we see it as trolling for clients and annoying, but she carries on thread after thread, post after post, to the point where it is now obnoxious.  One would assume that seeing negative reactions to this constant need for attention, that they would stop doing it.  We ALL know she is an escort, and we don't care!
