Question about making mesh avatars for a total noob

Recommended Posts

Ok, I made a model in blender before I got to test out the beta mesh, is there a way that I can make into an avatar on SL? If anyone knows of any tutorials I should refer to or has any tips, help would be greatly appreciated. ^^

I made an experimental Mesh avatar: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Experimental-Mesh-Avatar-Female-Boxed/2059187

I did it in 3ds Max, but the process should be similar in Blender.  You need to import a "bone structure" that matches the one that SL avatars use.  Then you weight the vertexes (corners) of your model to whichever bones they need to move with.  That gets exported to a Collada file, then imported to SL.  As far as I know Blender 2.57 does not export correctly (it's still in beta and not done).  When imported to SL, you just wear it anywhere on your avatar, and it will follow your movements.  I did a 100% transparent alpha layer to hide the default avatar.  The tricky part is getting the weights right so it moves properly.

Look in past threads here for pre-made bone setups, some people have already taken the SL original avatar and copied it for use in other 3D programs.

Thanks for your help :) I have one more question. Is there a way I can do this in blender, or is there another free or extremely low cost modeling program I can use?

This one is rather old (may 2010) but it may help a bit:

Please note that Blender 2.5 is still not able to export rigged meshes!!!

For now only blender 2.49 works for that. Also checck this video if you happen to get weird spiky results after importing your avatar to mesh:
