Hey everyone,

A while ago a 'friend's' alt showed up and asked me to re-befriend him after telling me his original avatar was banned from SL. His original avatar was still in my friends list. Also, his old profile was still visible. The group list in his old profile even listed two of my groups. However, inside the info panels of these groups, his old name could no longer be found.

Today, I tried to contact a landlord about a broken group inviter bot, but he seemed offline. I became member of one of the open access groups in his list to check when he had been online recently at all. I did this to assess whether it was likely to expect an answer from him sooner rather than later. Had he not been online for weeks, I'd probably not bother even contacting him. Oddly enough, his name appeared to be absent in all of the group member lists that I checked.

So here's my question:

What does the absence of a particular name from an otherwise visible group member list imply? A. Is this particular person somehow able to hide their name from the list, or B. have they been banned from SL?

Could be various things:

  1. Dropped packet
  2. Is in a role that doesn't have "Reveal Members" set
  3. Group is too full and the server is refusing to send the member list

More than likely it is thing 2. Being banned from SL doesn't remove you from any groups or change your inventory. If they are banned, they will likely show up as "Unavailable" on the web profiles(my.secondlife.com):

I'm fairly certain that there is a group setting allowing to hide the members within a specific role. So you might check again and see if other people of the same role show up.

I am owner in the groups from which Person #1 on my post disappeared. I would at least have expected that as an owner, I'd still be able to see them, despite their hidden status. As for dropped packet: Person #1 remained hidden over the course of months when I occasionally looked. And these groups are definitely not too full. (about 30 members in one, about a 1000 members in the other). I will check the role thing though. Although I'm pretty sure I didn't hide the officers' roles from view at all.

Contrary to Chaser above: Yes if someone is banned from Second Life they will either immediately or eventually cease to show up in anyone's Groups.

While I cannot speak for the Web Profiles I can tell you that a banned user's Legacy styled Profile will still show up (in viewers like Firestorm) as long as they are in your Friend List.

Easy solution: delete Person #1 from the group(s).

As someone with a similar problem I can tell you that this solution ... is not an option. You cannot delete a user that does not show up in the member list.

Ah, that's a different point then, if you are the group owner... a member cannot set the "don't show me" option in a group. That's something you can do for each group role, but you'll still be able to see those members.

So it does seem as if the account is / was gone...

I unfriended the 'banned' accounts and their names no longer show up in Search. I guess that was the culprit: double click an alleged banned person in yours friends list and you will be able to see the profile. Delete them, and then you won't be able to see them anymore.

Yep, an oddity in the system to be certain but that is how it works. Mind that this ban can be by Governance (as an AR response) or because the user had a Premium Account and failed to pay the fee for a time.

Or it could be voluntary deletion of their account, though if you do delete your account it stays listed for a while (90 days I think) just in case you change your mind and want to reverse the deletion. So it doesn't necessarily mean they were banned, just that... for whatever reason... the account no longer exists.

Banned acconts won't show in search almost immediately and deleted ones won't show after some number of months.  However, if you have them on your Friends list or have a Calling Card from them, you'll be able to still pull up their legacy profile - even years later.  If you try to access their web profile directly, you'll get the 'name unavailable' that Chaser posted.

Deleted accounts drop from groups over time, but I'm not sure how long it takes.  I've no clue how long banned accounts take to leave groups.  For deleted accounts, I know that when I pull up the profile, I still see all of the groups that the person was in when they last logged in, even though the group itself no longer shows the person - sort of like the profile is frozen in time.

Failing to pay your premium gets you temp-banned?

I always thought it would just revert you down to basic.

Failing to pay your Premium gets your account put into a form of lockdown for a time. After that time has passed, it gets banned/permanently locked down.

My ex had it happen to her - fell on hard enough times so suddenly that she had no way to so much as log in to release her Linden Home and downgrade. By the time she had proper Internet Access again, the account was quite gone.

LL basically locks your account until you pay up.  After some-odd months, the account pretty much appears as any other deleted or banned account - legacy profile still visible from Friends list, but no longer shows in search, etc..

It does. You have to go into your dashboard and manually set it back down to Basic before stopping the payments.
