There are those that use mains to do nefarious things.

There are a lot of reasons why some people make them. For one it might  be about playing as something totally different and you dont want that associated with your main account. Some people dont want

During my first SL tour-of-duty, I created a Sugar Mommy account to hold my CC information, Madelaine Marbach, and Snugs Eisenhart. Snugs was a male avi I'd put together to entice an old IRC/Messenger

I guess its the same reason that people make up pseudo personalities online... They are hiding themselves, cant be honest with themselves, cant be honest with surroundings, list goes on and on. There is a quite interesting amount of literature on the matter of pseudo personalities... But the conclusions come up to being more about being able to accept oneself or those around them not being able to. Saying that, there are people that use alts for other means also.... Like when I used another chat client, I have/had multiple nicknames until I found the one that fit me most(mind you they were reflective of my state and also my mentality at the time and were more descriptive than most believe). So there are those that are still searching for their own identity also, which is a admirable thing to do, but in aspect, there are those that use alts to do nefarious things and that is were it gets messy too...

Pretending to be someone else than I am in real life is fun for me.   Using an alt to try a different aspect of SL is also fun...vampire...neko...furry...Slave.. mistress...etc.  I don’t take it seriously.   This isn’t a social network for me.  I have fun with others and avoid people who take it too seriously

I have alts going back 10 years for various reasons (e.g. work account versus personal account, dedicated roleplay), but my primary reason today is land. I have a few alts that I upgraded to Premium for either their Linden Home or to use the 1024m² tier allotment to expand my mainland parcel.

I made an alt to escape all the guys I cheat on my husband with..

Just kidding..hehehe

I made an alt a few weeks back to see what the new members went through when they entered second life.. Then just decided to invest in that one and run around seeing second life from a different perspective.. plus, it gives me a chance to start with a new inventory which feels really good.. I'm gonna organize the hell of of this one!! \o/

I did the exact same thing lol... down to being determined to keep my latest alt's inventory organized!  So far so good :)

I have a few alts.  My first, AjayMcDowwll Alter was made because I couldn't resist the "Alter" last name, and for my purposes, being open about who I am is helpful.  Also, I was working in a very busy region at the time and liked being able to leave work behind when I was off, but still be "me".

My second alt, Piper Kitalpha, I ended up creating because I was too easy to find in my "Alter" account which made it difficult to relax in that form.  From that was born this less-recognizable alt.

My latest alt, Ellie Bellisserian, I made up at the end of July of this year to find out about the new user onboarding process.  From there I decided to try to mesh her out cheaply, and was successful if a bit annoyed due to neck seam issues... and finally said the heck with it and stuck her in an Maitreya body with a Catwa head.

The neck and body transition is nearly flawless with that combination, by the way.

Ellie is a bit of a change, not only with her organized wardrobe, but also with her components.  My other alts are my clones, outside of maybe haircolor, and we all wear the Genus Classic 001 head.  Ellie, however, was created when Genus was closed due to the DMCA, so Catwa it was!  When Genus reopened I tried a Genus head on her and it just looked wrong.  She's a Catwa girl through and through lol.

So, nope.  No nefarious purposes here, and my poor alts rarely get out unless I'm sending Ellie over to clean my pool because I'm busy otherwise inworld.  They're basically my crash test dummies/ photo props/ occasional entertainment.  I'm open about them on the forums, my husband knows about all of them, and if any of my friends meets one, I'm always sure to clarify exactly who I really am :)

To be honest I have other alts but mostly they are for people to feed from in my circle of friends in Bloodlines that are to stay alive if they can't afford to drink from the bar or can find others to attack. I tend to use these alts around 8 alts to help provide a stable feeding for my friends in Bloodlines. I don't see a problem if people have alts.

This ava is an alt to my former main.  She was used as an extra set of eyes on a sim for security.

Over the years things became......... complicated. Plus RL was taking a lot of my time  So I took some time off. Years in fact.

When I decided to come back I used this ava and have never looked back. I rarely log my main anymore, mainly to look for things I can transfer to this ava. My main is set so no friends can see me. The 2 avas have no friends in common except for 1.

In older days, I used to roleplay a lot. It was common in the scene to differ roles with different accounts, for the sole purpose of making the immersion easier.
Nowadays, an alt exists for business reasons. Testing perms, scripts, etc. Important to know what it looks like on the customer's end if customer support is needed.

I don’t have alts. I just have extra accounts! And child avatars don’t count as alts because they came from my pixel-womb that is such an insulting thing to say to a mother! :P

( Yuumo is actually a roleplay alt that turned into my main because I lost access to my first )

Many reasons I believe.. if you are working in SL (especially some jobs very stressing such as estate management etc..) you will probably want to make different avatar for enjoying SL content.. constantly getting support request from costumers not fun.. so you will most likely work between selected hours and switch to alt..

Second reason if you are designer you might create multiple projects.. gadgets / buildings / stream services. It will be difficult to maintain everything you do under 1 avatar. costumers and purpose of their IMs / note cards most likely get mixed up and cause headache in long run.. its wise to assign different job for each avatar.

A big reason lately is the Bellesaria homes. They're adorable and if you've landed a great location and put a lot of work into a Victorian or whatever style and then the Stilts get released, your alt needs to go house shopping so you don't have to give up your existing home.

This is my main and somewhat attractive i guess. I get lots of attention  sometimes from males and female Avis lol. Sadly i'm not really good at saying no so when i friend everyone they all want me to be with them so sometimes i  hide under my ugly Alt.

it's not sad, it's a choice and help to be not bothered by others constantly jumping on single people.
And don't forget many make pictures fór the pictures, not for romantic purposes.
You will never know if somebody you see has a partner or not unless you'r in very close contact with such person.

This is somewhat explained on my forum profile but here it is:

My first default avatar was created to investigate applications for (university) instruction within SL (2005). He is dead now.

I then set up my own account (2006) to use with students whom I brought in-world to explain textures, 3D space and basic prim building. SL was/is a great tool to explain and demo Photoshop for composite textures, tiling, alpha channels and more. He is still around but I don’t use him much.

I created another avatar for me to use outside of teaching, because SL is the kind of place where there should be clear demarcations between in-class and after-class exploration. A teacher should not be discovered hanging out in BDSM clubs. It messes with tenure. At this point I was building quite a bit, and planned to open an-in world store. I read somewhere that female avatar proprietors did better selling stuff. So Lucy was born.

‘I created another avatar (Alma) for building anonymously. Being a proprietor, technical support guru for my builds, and group head tended to fill up my inbox with lots of stuff. (Invites, notecards, questions, commissions, etc). Having an anonymous guy let me focus on building in peace.

Over the years this last avatar became my main persona. He suits me. But I still use the other two from time to time. Keeping all three in mesh heads and bodies and clothes is sometimes a strain on my wallet, but such is SL. It’s nice to have options..

No it's not. It is sad that it is needed. I recently partnered my own alt to see if that would lower the amount of IM's at events or anywhere high traffic from guys lurking around at those places searching for prey. And it did, massively. So I stay happily partnered with my alt. We are a great match afterall, always agree with eachother.

On the topic, I have around 13 alts I think. Started making a couple when way back I had a shape store and I used them as models, but the amount grew as I love making new looks on alts, give them their own personality and all. It's like playing with dolls I guess :)

Also one of my avies, actuall my former main as she is older than me, I use as a contact for people who like to be posed in erotic pictures. That way I keep those of my main friend list, and when I feel like making those kind of pictures, I can log her on and see who is available.

I have an alt who I sometimes log on if I want to be absolutely alone, she has no friends on her list. Also a couple of alts desigend for specific roleplay settings, though in the end I never got to it as I kinda suck at roleplaying, but they make excelent photo props now.

An alt I made to explore erotic venues and situations I did not want to do with my main. Mostly I just log on Zeta though, and the rest are used in photography now and then.
