I don't fully understand why people make Alts. I have invested a lot of time and effort into my AV, and it's my "brand". I'm an Escort, so my AV is my marketing tool, and I need people to recognize me. I can see some nasty reasons to do so, but beyond that I don't get it!!! Thoughts anyone???

Because not everyone is an hypersexual escort aka prostitute.

During my first SL tour-of-duty, I created a Sugar Mommy account to hold my CC information, Madelaine Marbach, and Snugs Eisenhart. Snugs was a male avi I'd put together to entice an old IRC/Messenger

There are a lot of reasons why some people make them. For one it might  be about playing as something totally different and you dont want that associated with your main account. Some people dont want to be judged by their friends for wanting to explore their more unusual side or tastes. a vanilla main and a kinky bdsm alt.

Some use it to spy on friends and partners to see if they are really trustworthy or not. Did they talk about what you said or did. Have they revealed any secrets you told them. Are they being faithful to you.

some make alts for specific role play situations, so that it is kept completely separate from their other account. The abusive Master vs the caring and respectable sub.

You might be totally vanilla on your main and super raunchy and lewd on your alt.

Using an alt lets you explore all the possibilities of the rainbow and not have to worry what others think or feel about you doing so.

some use an alt as their builder or test subject so they can see how things look on them. or build without being interrupted all the time and have friends get all upset that they are ignoring them.

The good doctor vs the evil scientist. The demure and helpless vs the powerful and demanding.

some even make alts to have as their partner so no one will bother them about trying to be that to them.

For many reasons, sometimes serious but most of the time just game related.

Anyway this not my main account of course, this is an alt made back in 2011 if i remember well because when i decided to do business in SL i had to properly let Linden Labs know my financial/id information in order to be able to withdraw money, etc. So for the safety of that account, better way to track my "real accounting data"  and also knowing that "competition" in SL is very high and most of the time very dirty from incompetent people i decided to make this one which was only used for all the "Ingame activities" like building, managing, shopping stuff etc.

Main account doesnt even have a mesh body, never needed it actually, it was purely dedicated to business.

Also i have another alt which is used for Group Management reasons.

I guess for me it's not necessary. All of my friends know what I do in SL, and most Escort as well (or are clients). I'm not into virtual relationships, so that part is a non issue. Since I'm a switch, I can play both Miss and sub properly without faking it. I couldn't ever RP vanilla. I would be laughing too hard, and disgusted at myself!!!

People make alts for all kinds of reasons. Here are mine.

  • My first avatar is now an alt.
  • My second avatar (originally my alt but now my main) was made to just "try something else".
  • My third was created when I felt the need to have a "bank" for the vampire clan in which I was 2nd in command.
  • My fourth belonged to my ex who decided to leave SL. I promised to hold the account for them and to log in from time to time, a promise which I have kept for nearly 11 years now.
  • Avie 5 and 6 were two that belonged to a friend who did not just want to let their avie and inventory go to waste, so they passed it on to me.

I still use some of them, I have a male alt on which I experiment with male clothes and stuffs. Another one is a female alt who I like to dress in all freebies (and try to make her look amazing). Another one I use to quickly log in to check out locations or events without alerting my friends or groups to my presence (I love them, but if I want to quickly do or try something, I don't want to have to explain to 5 different people that I am there just for a few minutes).

Some are alts that became mains.. they created the alt to get away from what ever they once did or said or allowed to be done to them. Its often easier to to start fresh then try and live down or rewrite the story of the other character. Its often easier to just let that one go/die/fade away and be forgotten then have to remember it all the time or have it remembered. Its often easier to delete that account or send it to its final resting space then continue using it and remembering everything that was done with it.

like me..im a alt that become a main.. my original account deleted years ago and even the email with it was deleted so I would have no way to recover it let alone try to remember the name or password. all logs of it deleted. no records of it existing to go back too. no sources of the memories associated with it.. except what wont go away in my head..

During my first SL tour-of-duty, I created a Sugar Mommy account to hold my CC information, Madelaine Marbach, and Snugs Eisenhart. Snugs was a male avi I'd put together to entice an old IRC/Messenger chat friend into SL. I thought he'd have fun exploring here. Instead, he went and got married. I kept Snugs around to help set couples' poses.

When I returned for my second tour-of-duty five weeks after leaving the first, I created a string of Madelaines as I searched for an acceptable last name. I eventually settled on McMasters because there was no McMistress. I brought Snugs along, as a McMasters, a female, and my partner.

I then created BillThePirate as a tease for Rolig Loon, who used that impossible target name to force no_sensor events in her scripts. LepreKhaun then teased me back by using "RootBeerDrinkingLampShade" in his scripts, forcing me (because I have no free will) to create another alt by that name.

While having silly fun on a beach with friends years ago, I jammed my tummy slider all the way to the right, declared myself pregnant by immaculate conception, delivered 23 baby octopi, and named them all Dave. That required creating Dave23McMasters, the runt of the litter.

Just a couple months ago, Scylla posted this, and I was forced to create HillaryHijinks.

I hope this helps you fully understand why people create alts, Bagnu!

I see a lot of reasons now. I wan't to change my username because Bagnu was something random that maybe I saw somewhere. I don't remember. And I hate it!!! I thought it was only for a login, and wouldn't go past that!!! I'm Pearl Sextoy, and I'm worried that may confuse people in the forums and inworld. Everyone calls me Pearl or ST when I'm inworld though.

Doubtful.  Wonderful thing about display names is you can do that with them, as long as the DN was kept while your UN was changed you wouldn't see a difference.

I have 5 alts total my first was created because i wondered what happened to me when i logged off, second alt can't remember why i created it maybe it was to milk money trees🤔, third alt i used to get ghosted quite a bit and i wanted an account with the last name "Ghost", fourth alt wanted to get "Resident" as a last name before someone else did, fifth alt i'd thought about making a male alt for years for the odd occasions i need a bloke and don't want to sacrifice one of my other alts to be a bloke for a short while so created a male

I have four alts.

1.  Male Alt - used for when I need a male in a picture or have to blog male items.
2.  Blonde Alt - also used for blogging when I want to showcase two outfits instead of just one or two views of the same outfit.
3.  Child Alt - used for blogging a friend's child clothing store.
4.  Spare Alt - has no purpose, I just play Barbies with her (shopping, dress up, take pics).

None of them are used to "play" SL beyond the odd shopping trip and taking pics of them.

Most scripters, creators and builders have an alt to test scripts, builds, notably mostly for testing when no full rights for permissions etc. available and to test conditions for end users.

Tilia ought to offer more services for SL businesses. Multiple accounts, database export, 2-factor authentication, ACH in/out, etc. It would be useful to have separate accounts to hold assets more safely without needing a separate avatar for them.

I have one active alt at the moment. I have him, because I wanted a male avatar and its easier to have that on a seperate account (seperate inventory, different name). I may make a third alt, once I figure out what four legged animal I'd like to be.

I have one old account (almost as old as this one) which I made for a specific roleplay that I stayed in for about a month before quitting. He and I are both Premium and the only reason I keep him now is for his land allowance and stipend. And I have one new one, made just a couple of weeks ago, when one of my friends decided to do the "alt on a budget" thing so I decided to do the same. Back in the day, I made two or three alts just for the funny names (before "Resident") but I didn't keep any of them.

I have several. Nearly all of them are "public"; I don't hide the fact that I have them, or who they are.

Casidy Craig; my original account made in 2006. He was loosely based on one of my longstanding tabletop RPG characters. I stayed in SL about 3 months before getting bored and going back to other games. I lost his password but have since recovered it and now keep him because he's my oldest account and still gets the L$500 per week stipend.

Casteylan Hawker; based on the same RPG character and made about 18 months later because by this time I had forgotten Casidy's password and which email address I used. And because the name "Hawker" was on the name list, and for story reasons it was a perfect name for him.

This account. Which I made because I decided I needed one to represent the real me, instead of a roleplay character. This became my main account as soon as I made it.

Ryder Palfrey; made solely for the funny name. Only one person has ever got the joke.

Indranoor; made shortly after the start of the "Resident" last name, because I wanted a girl alt. "Noor" means more or less the same as "Luminos".

FrankieNoir; made to be the bartender at my club. I was originally planning to make him a bot but I never did figure it out.

I have one last one which is mostly secret; only Madison knows about this one. It was made to be a "secret guest" at Noir, to be brought in if no-one else is there, just so the DJ doesn't feel bad about playing music to no-one but me. It's been needed for this purpose only twice.

There have been a few others which I have since deleted. Casteylan Hawker is pretty much retired and never used but I haven't deleted him because I am rather fond of the name. The others all still get used on occasion.

I have an alt that I use for designing pose drafts. It has the word "alt" in the name, and wears free bodies, with a single set of clothing for each of the male and female looks to provide modesty. No one with more brain cells than fingers could ever accuse me of using that alt for anything questionable.

Yep.

- My main avi is Pixie who started as a character I wanted to create, but has over the years simply become a representation of who I am in RL but in SL.

- My alternative alt who I created when Pixie basically became in-world me, and I wanted another avi to try out new looks with and explore another side of myself on. I very rarely use her these days.

- My sexy alt which I just use for hanging out on beaches, playfully flirting with guys and having fun with. If I accidentally make friends with people on this alt, I will redirect them to Pixie!

- My fashion alt which I use when I want to log in and spend time dressing up/putting together outfits on SL without speaking to anyone or having to respond to IMs. I don't tell anyone about her because there's no point really. She's used exclusively for private/alone time.

I have created alts to do pictures, it is easier if you want to do a picture with someone else doing something specific just to have and alt do it rather than get someone else and have them follow your instructions. Usually after the specific picture in done I forget the log in info though.

I have considered using an assistant alt to work on my business in world, So I can work without getting interrupted by people IMing me and wanting me to go do other things.

Technically, this account is an alt, because it's not the first one I made. The name of my original account is my usual online handle, didn't want to use that because I hated that it had to have a last name, which just doesn't work for me.
I got a few alts, tho I rarely use them. I have  male alt I work on sometimes, I have a female alt that is only allowed to use free stuff. Some are just because I wanted a certain name, but all of them are rather collecting dust - well, the malt not as much, tho.

Send them to my office for a casting. One after the other. They all have to pass.
Sleen will have a lot of fun.

There are some good reasons for ALT's

Caroline was an ALT actually. I started that account as the front figure of my (back then) new blog. It was initially an experiment.
At the time I had no idea, that it eventually will turn into what it has become today. Caroline became my main. I hardly ever login with the original first account.

A few years later Jessica was born. The idea was to start a whole new story, and a whole new blog. I wanted to "be" somebody different. Also the account had another purpose: Customer Service for our 3DXChat subscribers and promoting the game at our venues Inworld. On her I did a lot of noob  mentoring. Yes, she went into escorting as well, by accident actually. Part time whore so to speak.

Then I have Michelle. Mitch was also an experiment at first. I wanted to see how it feels to "be" and work as a black woman. Charleen is my older lady, same purpose: How does it feel?
And then there is Sheraka, my little teen girl (which I used for research for blog posts on rather dubious regions.

Added Bonus: Its fun for me to start all over again.

I had another one (Sheraka Sirnah) for the purpose of playing a character in a RP setting. They became obsolete when I left that setting (Gor). I actually forget her password and can't remember what E-Mail I was using back then.
