I do respond to "Hi how are you" as well.

Even to a simple "hi". And here is why:

I do not have this weird self important attitude, that people have to impress me, or make a special effort in order to be allowed to talk to me or to qualify for a responds. I think that would be kinda rude if not arrogant, sorry.

Some people are shy and or introverted and might find it difficult to approach a stranger. It might intimated them or are afraid of a negative answer. They might be testing the water so to speak.

Others might come from cultures where a short, not to intrusive meet and greet is considered a minimum social requirement to start a conversation, it is considered polite. Think of Britain for example. Small talk is mandatory there.

If you run a business in Second Life (like myself) it could also be counter-productive to ignore people. Do I know if that person is maybe a potential big scale advertiser?

Hey You!

Say hi, when you meet me Inworld. Don't feel intimidated, I haven't bitten anyone in a long time.

I generally respond to a plain "hi" with "Hi, how can I help you?". Or to "Hi, how are you?" with "I'm fine thanks, how can I help you?"

Then either they ask the question that they were wanting to ask in the first place ("I like your hair, where's it from?" or "I'm new and stuck, how do I make a profile picture?" etc.) Or they just fall silent altogether, in which case I hit the little X in the top corner of the conversation and carry on with what I was doing.

I generally assume that silence means they've read my profile, reached the part where I say I'm really a guy, and they've decided I'm no longer of interest to them.  This is one of the reasons I particularly like nude clubs and beaches like SDI - not because it encourages sexual IMs, but because me without clothes on actively discourages them. I get far fewer annoying "Hi how r u?" IMs when it's all hanging out, so to speak. 😄

I did have a chuckle at the idea that "hi" would be an unmissable business opportunity, because that's never happened to me in thirteen years. Events and the like just send a notecard. It is often customers though, so like I said, I do respond...

However, don't do thirty minutes of small talk before getting to the point simply because I'm British and you think it's mandatory. It isn't rude to say, "Hi, my product didn't deliver, here's the transaction ID." Getting to the point in the first message is perfectly fine and gets the problem solved much faster.

Adding for point 2....ask open ended questions, ie questions with more than a "yes/no" answer.

And remember, there is nothing worse than receiving an IM that goes like this...

Them : Hi.
Me : Hello there.
Them : How are you?
Me : Fine thanks.  How are you today?
Them : Fine too.
Me : Great to hear.

Don't expect me to carry the conversation if you approached me first.

if they continue to talk with some real conversation  I might give them a chance,  but if the conversation stays at that level, goodbye.

Ask how they feel about the coming election, does Trump stand a chance?

This is also why I keep telling people that writing 'I like shopping and walking on the beach' on your profile makes you appear like a one-dimensional bore.

This kind of stood out to me and so I have to ask. How does that make someone look like a one-dimensional bore? I mean there is only so many things someone can put on the front page of their profile as it is anyway and most people generally list their interests in their pick tabs I would think that elaborate on more about them even which is what I usually recommend to people to do. So I was just curious about where your train of thought was on that. Thanks in advance.😎

It's a bit like stating 'I breathe and I like to eat pizza'.

"Hi" is a good start when you are a sex worker.
The second part of your post I can totally relate to. I am German after all.

I hate that!!! It's true that "Hi" is a perfect starting point though. I'm an Escort, so that's how it starts, then we go from there.
