Squeefie
I'm completely new to SL. Im coming from IMVU so this is a lot to take in lol The whole avatar thing confuses me cause specific brands and skins are equipped differently and its just all so confusing to me. If anyone is down to add me and show me the ropes, id very much appreciate it ;--; any noob tips/info that i can use helps a lot too! Nalates Urriah
The short of it is clothes have to match the brand of body. Otherwise they do not fit. SL has a huge learning curve... when you want to do all the stuff you see 5 to 10 year veterans doing. If you just want to get around and see what is happening then it is pretty easy. Having it explained to you is probably not going to happen. There is too much and no one way to do things. So, the fast way is to jump into YouTube and search for the "Second Life" beginner tutorials and then filter for most recent. Then search for tutorials on the parts of SL you find interesting. Or... ask specific questions. How do I... type questions with specific answers most of us are will to help with. Asking someone to explain SL is like asking someone to explain RL to someone. WAY TOO BIG a task to take on. Edited May 31, 2020 by Nalates Urriah spelling

Nalates Urriah
Take it in small bits. Find one thing you want or need to do and researc just that. Also, use the Answers section of this forum. Ask questions there. If you search on your question you can often find a previous ask and answered of your question and not have to wait.
Tattooshop
Tutorials help a lot, of course, but your own experience matter too, so start to exploring SL, visit places, meet people, this may take some time, cause people here do what they want to do mostly. IMVU is a bit different, I guess. Good luck! Edit: Ah yes, p.s. ALWAYS TRY DEMOS before buy! lol Edited May 31, 2020 by Tattooshop
MoiraKathleen
In terms of body, head, skin, clothes... trying demos is very important. The other part is understanding and finding what is compatible, and also which mesh body has a lot of clothes in styles you like, made for it. With mesh heads and bodies, often you will need to get a head applier or BOM skin specific for the brand of head, and then also get a body applier or BOM skin from the same skin creator in the same skin tone for the specific brand of mesh body you choose. So taking time to try demos and looking at various offerings available is a very important step. Demos for heads, bodies and skins almost always have to be obtained from in-world stores - you won't find the major bodies for sale on the Marketplace. Also, skim through the contents in this section of the forum - there are a many threads with discussion, opinions and recommendations on various bodies, heads and skins. Reading through some of those should give you some ideas about some of the major or popular brands, and you will start to build up a list of name of brands and start to see which ones are mentioned more than others. You can then search in-world for the stores for the various brands mentioned, and then go see what they have that you might like. Trying demos for clothes is wise also, and a lot of clothes shopping can be done on the marketplace or at events in-world (as well as at in-world stores). Once you've narrowed down mesh body choices, do a search on marketplace for the mesh body brand, to get an idea about how many and what different types of styles of clothing are available for the mesh body brand.

Welcome to Second Life : ) Kind Regards, Josephine
SpiritSparrow Skydancer
You do not have to have a expensive mesh body to have fun in sl. Linden Lab has a huge assortment of quality avatars in the library part of your inventory. Also you can get all sorts of free items in marketplace. A good AO (animation override) helps to. It depends on your purpose in SL what you would need. The less complex your avatar is the less likely you will have lag.
