You can't downgrade unless you get rid of your Land and/or Linden Home the only perk you loose when you downgrade is the ability to own land the rest of the perks stay until the time your premium plan would come up for renewal

Claireschen is right.  To be really clear, you do not have to get rid of any land that you own in private estates or any land that you rent anywhere. You just have to sell or abandon any land you own in the Mainland estate, including a Linden Home.

Well... if it is a group-owned Mainland plot, aka no Linden Home, you can look up services for tier rental. Instead of paying another resident for land, you pay them to donate bits of their tier level with your group. Usually, you're inviting an alt to your group (I suggest making a separate group role just for tier donation and limiting the options to that) and that alt deeds the rented bit to the group's belongings.

As long as the group holds enough tier allowance to cover the sqm of land "you" own, you're good to go. It might actually turn out cheaper.

You won't be able to sell or to buy new land, though, unless you go premium again.

It seems like this is the same thing that groups of people (like The Forum Cartel) do to own land as a group, the only difference being that in this scenario, money changes hands to buy the use of the donated tier. I remember reading something about this a looong time ago on the forums, in the context of selling the use of unused tier to groups that need a "donation".

I understand how "tier rental" by groups works.  I myself donate my unused tier to a group in exchange for a weekly fee.  I was just wondering if anyone has actually used Lillith's idea to group own Mainland when they themselves are not Premium.

(Why is it that I seem to be having a hard time getting my concepts across today!?  Nobody understands meeeee!)

One guy who does tier rental often posts in the Mainland section... or at least he did offer it when I switched to that method: @beethros Karashttps://community.secondlife.com/profile/828397-beethros-karas/ .

I'm currently renting tier from Elanthius Flagstaff - secondlife:///app/agent/1117dbc5-c005-40ca-8b59-5b51f96d1b7b/inspect .

It's L$ 7830 for 4 weeks and my group owns 9568 sqm right next... well, left next :) ... to the Jeogeot Gulf. 3284 prims to play with, yay!

Another big plus is that you don't have the steep tier category jumps as in LL's own system. Instead, it's just right for the amount of land you own.

I used to rent tier from Elanthius, years back.  I wanted to buy some more land at one point that would have increased me above the 8192 sqm tier that I was paying for, but not a whole lot more.  I actually planned to bump a couple of alts to Premium, but wanted to delay it a while so that my Premium renewals were spread out better.  Therefore, I rented tier for a few months.

If I remember correctly, when I did the calcs, if I actually saved up the Premium stipends to pay the Premium renewal, it was cheaper than renting -- but only a little.  Depending on how much the tier rental is these days, compared to the increased Premium fee, rental might be cheaper, but it might also be closer to a toss-up.

With the increased Premium fees, I've thought about looking into the tier rental again, to see how it compares.

Elanthius

gosh! there is a name from ages past

a story

I first met Elanthius when I was wandering down a linden road on the mainland. He was standing on the road not saying anything, and there was this other person on their parcel by the road. I say Hi Hi! in the chat like you do. The parcel person says hi back. The Elanthius person never said anything but oh! well may be afk. I start chatting to the parcel person and turns out they are trying to sell their land by the roadside.  This was when roadside land was premo price before the adfarming rules came in

the whole parcel, 4096m, was set for sale at 5L per sqm. But no takers, including the still silent Elanthius.  Turns out the parcel person had been reducing the price over the last previous days, with their next tier date due the next day.  After a bit more chat turns out that the person was more wanting to reduce their tier rather than make any kind of profit really. So I say that they could subdivide and just sell half (which they didn't know how to do). So I chat them thru how to do that and the different ways they could cut it. They ended up cutting the parcel in half and decided to keep the inner parcel, live in their skybox, and sell the roadside parcel. Then they asked me if wanted to buy it.  I said I only have L$6200 and they will easily get 10,000 at least for the now 2048m roadside.  And they go: They can't be bothered with this anymore - tier date due tomorrow. That I can have it for L$6000. I go: umm! ok! but only if you absolutely sure. They say yes they are, set it to me, and I buy it

off they went up in the sky and start rearrange their skybox to fit over their now 2048m parcel

so I am standing there looking at my new bargain roadside and I get a IM. Is from the Elanthius person. And he asks: What are you going to with the parcel? And I say I am going to chop into four 512m, sell the two roadsides for 5000 each and the two back ones for 2000 each

and he start to grumble at me. about how doing this will just add to the ad-farming clutter.  That as soon as I cut then a amateur adfarmer will swoop on the two roadsides and chop them down to 16ms.  And then in his gruff way told me to sell it him for what I paid and to stay out of the land market business. That is not a place for amateurs like me helping to mess things up

i just laugh and say umm! nah! That he could have helped the person and got the parcel instead of just standing there silently like a swoopy lurker and I say he can have the 2048m for L$10,000. He moan and groan in my IM  about that. While he is doing this I set it to him for 10000 and tell him.  By now he almost figuratively lying on the ground  going thru his last dying moments ever on earth from all the pain

then he goes: You witch! Alright! and buys it. And then grumbles about how he is going to take loss on the whole deal and how I am going to be the ruin of his SL for ever after. And I go: thanks! for the money. He call me a witch again but with a winky smiley so we both know he was just faking all his gruff. And I say: You trade in horses as well don't you ?  And he laugh

the person who sold me the land, was still up in the sky. I IM them and gave them L$2000. They IM back and say whats that for?  I said I just  flip the parcel for L$10000 and I give them half the profit. 2000.  And the person laugh and say that Elanthius had been in their IM also earlier offering L$10000 for the whole 4096m. That he had been there the day before as well with the same offer.  Which cracked me. Mr Sneaky Swoopy Horse Trader Elanthius. The person says I don't have to give them anything more. And I go: Is all good. 2000L for helping another person is way more than I usually get which is typically 0. They say thanks and I say thanks you and that was it

Elanthius had by then reset the parcel back to sale to me for L$10000.  I say to him that I am not going to buy it back. And he says that this is his land reseller policy.  Setting parcels back to whoever he buys them from for the same purchase price, for 24 hours, so that the seller can reclaim it during that time, if they make a mistake or change their mind. As some times people do this and then regret it. His 24 hour reclaim policy saved him a whole lot of hassle. He ended up chatting to me about the business of being a mainland parcel trader and I learned quite a lot from him about it
