On Region Restarts:
Regions will be restarted if they have been running for more than 10 days on Tuesday (Main Channel) and Wednesday (RCs) regardless of whether or not new code is being deployed, for the general health and well being of the Simulators. Nothing beats turning it off and then on again ... once in a while.

As always please plan events around these maintenance windows. However, if you are hosting an event on Tuesday or Wednesday when we're not deploying new code, you can restart your region ahead of time to avoid interruptions.

Is it my imagination or have the restarts been starting later the last few Tuesdays (and certainly finishing later)?

While restarts have obvious benefits, the process is quite disruptive for any activity that traverses multiple sims on set routes (as opposed to just lurking in one sim contemplating one's navel, or , better, someone else's * cough).   Sailing, flying, driving etc etc etc.

We have had a long standing event in Blake Sea at 11 am on Tuesdays (for over a decade) - on normal schedule restarts are finished and all is good, but when they are late, its almost impossible.  Effectively Blake Sea is 'down' for several hours.

An RC (Release Candidate) channel is a set of regions where the latest server versions are tested in-world before being promoted to the main channel. I don't know why they're rolled out on different days. Perhaps to ease the strain on both the hardware and the wetware.

I'd never thought myself as "wetware" - well well.  I'd hesitate before calling anyone "wet" in RL, here in the UK, it is a tad perjorative!  As to the roll times, perhaps the technicians responsible don't like getting up in the middle of their night now? As to the days, KT has it right, but perhaps also to avoid "mistakes" being made with the wrong code being rolled to a give channel?

@KT Kingsley - I'd been more used to the term "liveware" to describe the factor that is the bit that is most likely to go wrong!

I'd guessed you meant humans and was quite amused!

Well wetwear, meatwear, or whichever.  That is where a lot of the issues comes from and there isn't a patch for that issue. 🙂

Sorry, not really directed at you, LoganPryor.

... and to eliminate the use of RC Channel Names when discussing bugs, features, etc., specific to that software.  Use the server version string please.  “... current Blue Steel” is just as useless as “.. current version” when used in place of the  actual version string in a bug report.  Please stop making us cross reference the date the report was made with the release schedule, which you know from experience is unreliable as a reference tool.

Is is an old IT jargon from the early days of cognitive science and artificial intelligence: Hardware - Software - Wetware.

Where wetware refers to the human brain.

And you should have known for over a decade that rolling restarts can take longer if problems occur or additional work needs to be done. It always makes no sense to get excited and complain about it. Should Linden introduce the complete shutdown again, once or twice a week for 6 to 8 hours each? Would you prefer that? Calling on any habits is homemade nonsense and you are not preferred on Blake Sea just because you flutter around with your planes or park your oh so expensive yachts.
