Hello, I'm a hermit trying to find some enclosed private land where I can work on stuff and have a general place to live. I would like to buy something pretty cheap in irl money, but would like to see every offer.

i would strongly suggest taking @Lindal Kidd's class at Caledon Oxbridge in-world on buying and selling land. The class is held at noon SLT on Saturday's, and is free.  It's a very comprehensive class and I think will get you pointed in the right direction for how to look for what you are seeking..

Actually wait where would their class be under. Would it be under money and commerce?

SLT is "Second Life Time" which is the same as Pacific Time zone.  Because there are people in-world from all the time zones of the world, most all events are stated in SLT, and people who live in other time zones translate that to their own time zone.  The Caledon Oxbridge link in my post takes you to a SL map page with the location marked.  Caledon Oxbridge University is a location in SL which has free classes on a variety of SL related subjects,  and a good tutorial for new people coming into SL.   A good place to check out in general.

Hi @TerrinTore!  Welcome to the Forums, and I'm glad you found the Caledon Oxbridge campus.  My land class is given there every Saturday at 12 noon SL time (Pacific Daylight Time, the time shown in your viewer in the upper right corner).  Since it's nearly a week until my next class, here are some pointers to keep in mind...

All land in SL is, at bottom, a form of rental, because what you are really doing is renting time and resources on a Linden Lab server.  However, land "ownership"/rental takes several forms.

• You can get a Premium membership.  This allows you to own land on the Mainland.  You can own up to 1,024 square meters without having to pay any fees (other than your Premium membership).  If you own more Mainland than that, you will pay a monthly "tier" fee in addition to your Premium membership.
• Your 1,024 sq m. can be used to get a free Linden Home.  There are several different styles of homes available.  You can sign up for one of these homes here:  https://secondlife.com//land/lindenhomes/member.php
• Since you say you are a "hermit" you may want more privacy.  You can buy a parcel of land on the Mainland and put up a "skybox" (a house or other dwelling that's way up in the sky).
• You can also use some privacy features in the land controls to help keep others from bothering you while you are on your land.

If you don't want to pay for a Premium membership, you can rent land (either Mainland or land on a Private Estate) from another resident.

Do you have more information about the skybox? becuase I don't mind doing my own work to make skyboxes and stuff. I'm still really new to SL and don't know alot about skyboxes and Parcel's.

You can build your own skybox (or house).  I built the one I currently use.  There are also thousands of houses, and skyboxes, available from other creators, either in stores in world or on the Marketplace.

Sure, you can use a skydome.

When you buy or rent a piece of land, you also own all the air above it, up to infinity...although the highest point at which you can place objects is 4096m.  Most skyboxes are located somewhere between 1000m and 4000m, because texture-induced lag is much less above 1,000m.

There are two key numbers to keep in mind with any sort of home, whether it's on the ground or up in the sky above the ground:  footprint and land impact.

The footprint is how big it is, in the X and Y dimensions.  It must be smaller than the dimensions of your land parcel, because it ticks the neighbors off if parts of your home encroach into their space.

Each parcel has a "parcel land capacity".  This determines how many prims (or their equivalent) the parcel can support.  Most 1,024 sq m. parcels have a capacity of 351.  You want your home or skybox to be well under your parcel's maximum capacity, to leave room for furnishings, landscaping, toys, etc.  On our hypothetical 1,024 sq. m. parcel, I'd look for a home or skybox with a LI of 100 or less.

Makes sense, I don't mind scrounging around for a skydome with those kinds of parcel's! Although how would I buy land instead of renting it?

Oh yeah definitely don't want a private region, So considering where I am, I think I'll rent some land and get a sky dome for stuff. Although that leads to how I place a skydome, but idk if this is the right place to talk about that heh heh.

Placing a skybox is not difficult.  The main problem is making sure that it's positioned over your land and doesn't poke over the borders.  Here's one way to do that.

• Rez a cube, at ground level
• Edit the cube until it's a big, flat platform that extends to, but not over, the borders of your land
• Sit on the edge of the platform
• In the Object tab of the Edit window, change the Z position value to the altitude at which you want to place your skybox (you should have already flown up and checked several altitudes, to find one where there are not a lot of neighboring skyboxes.)
• Your platform, and you, will suddenly be thousands of meters in the sky!
• Stand up, and fly back up to stand on your platform in the air
• Rez your skybox on your platform.  Reposition it if you need to so that none of it sticks out over the edges (these edges now indicate the position of your land borders, because that's how you sized the thing down at ground level, and you edited it to go straight up.)
• Take a landmark for your new home
• Also, go to World/Set Home to Here to set your Home position at your new skybox
• Delete the platform, it's no longer needed
