I like how most those names involve around sex... Jazzhands, Salty, Vanilla, banana, etc...

Iknow this is first batch of last names but come on... why not choose like real common last names such as Marasco, Smith, Trump, Clinton, or common last names you'd actually see.

I get the Vanilla, I love the Vanilla, the Vanilla is a standing joke with me and another. Banana, I kind of get, that also is a standing joke with some real life friends, because I used to use the word banana in place of the word virgin when I was a teen ! Salty, hmmm, I don't want to go there (!) Jazzhands in a sexual way baffles me - and I want to stay baffled about that. Whenever I see the word Jazzhands, I think of Joey Tribbiani in Friends showing everyone that dance routine that ended with jazzhands.

I'm so creating a new alt, for the sole purpose of living in fetish wear and exploring every single kink I can think of, while wearing the surname Vanilla.

Yeesh, people must be really bored to be getting this bent out of shape about name changes that are voluntary. 10,000 threads about name changes and nearly everyone is clutching their collective pearl

Boy, do I feel stupid. I was so excited to be able to change my name I plonked down $40 and picked one of those last names that seemed to suit me best. All went well. Then I checked my email.... and discovered I was one of the people who had won a free name change! And I didn't even realise!

Plus, I didn't choose the name I had suggested, didn't even remember putting it forward. And just for the record, it was me that suggested 'Vanilla'. So now you know who to blame.

I've asked the Linden's for a refund but maybe I'll just have to store it up and change my name again sometime.

If the people who suggested the names actually got some commission when they were taken up by residents, old and new alike, I would have thought twice about creating a free version of the same thing (MarigoldVanilla without the expensive space in between both names).  I only wish I had created the new avatar years ago. I really like your name suggestion.

Would be nice though if they had a larger selection and perhaps some more decent names instead of the god awful set they have come out with.

Its a shame they are not opening up previous surnames for registration again. I mean, back then, some names slipped in and out over and over again and others only appeared once. I seldom ever see two of the same last name together anymore in SL so I doubt anyone is really going to complain too much. Personally I would be pretty stoked to see more people with my legacy surname. I would consider them my army and as one of the original bearers of the name...their leader.

Now you know what the new members who didn't finish registration thought for all those years that you had to choose a last name...

I think many have made very valid points about price and choices so I have nothing to add to that. I will say that my first response to them was oooo these mostly seem so cutesy but having seen how people are actually using them I am quite impressed, especially since they will rotate quite often as I understand it. As for my five cents, I am just thrilled there are more options, anything that allows for even more creative expression in this world of magic is a plus in my book. And generally speaking it has been my experience that customization in SL often costs...

I am super grateful that the first name can be changed too, I was not expecting that at all! When I came to SL I moved over from another grid where it was the convention to have your role-play title as part of your name. So not thinking it through I proceeded to do that here. I think most people didn't automatically think I was a dick trying to get greeted with an honorific but I kinda felt like a newbie prat about it. On top of that they literally ended the last names around that time (it didn't help that I didn't use my account after making it for about 3 month). I had picked a last name that was available for all of four month that I absolutely love (according to SL name watch there are only 828 so it really wasn't that simple in the later days to just fix the mistake)... So from my point of view I am happy that I could spend $40 to correct a nearly 10 year old mistake that had always been nagging at me.

Thank you Linden Labs for spotting there was demand for this and proceeding to do the grunt work to make it happen. I am feeling extra grounded and creative today which in a time like this is truly the most unexpected and wondrous gift.

@Prokofy Neva, I am almost afraid to tell, but I have 6 avatars on one email. Maybe one disappear over night now.... 😟

They are spread well out over the years, so perhaps LL does not care when it is obvious that they are not traffic bots or griefer toss-away avatars?

I remember once I made 12 alts because they were needed to hold land groups together. By that I mean not the required 3 avatars (which used to be the rule; now it is just 2) but that awful problem of "officer recall," whereby the members of your own land group where you paid the tier could throw you out of the group as a form of griefing. This was the Lindens' early experiments with "democracy". So the workaround for that was to have enough alts in groups so that if one officer was recalled you could still act to expel the griefer.

I remember at a Linden town hall where I protested about this, and Blue Linden lecturing me about how I had to campaign with "my people" and hope to be "elected"again -- this, in a land group, where I paid all the tier and the members were tenants. This was back in the day when we tried to take the silly hippie groups that distributed everything equally and re-cast them for business. You may recall my blog on this topic which was actually read by Cory and eventually they did reform the groups.

While "officer recall" was ridiculous and destructive, the proposition function that you could also vote on was a great idea but they removed that. I remember in that giant Concierge group with like 8000 people in it, I put a proposition about whether people opposed the VAT. But the Lindens closed it somehow.

I remember the Lindens closing all but 5 of my 12 accounts, and I wrote an appeal on every single closure, saying I did this because of their silly officer recall nonsense which had paralyzed my groups . What would happen is that once someone triggered a recall on you, and your alt, you were paralyzed. You couldn't exercise any of the group functions. It was sheer insanity. I believe 7 days had to pass before you could function in the group again and only if the recall failed. Imagine, you could be expelled from the group where you paid for the land. It took forever to get this across to the Lindens. Then when all that nonsense was over, there was still a need to have multiple groups because land groups start to really lag after about 500 members. As it is, you cannot search on names directly, you can only type in a few letters and hope to find a person.

At the first SL meet-up, Philip came up to me genuinely puzzled. He had personally read my appeals (SL was a lot smaller then). I didn't know what I was talking about. I sat down at a computer and showed him. That and other things about the groups. It was the most uncanny feeling. These people make these worlds, but they don't know that half of what goes on in them....

My entire Second Life, I have been doomed to be a second class citizen with no last name. I was very hopeful when I heard last names were making a return but my hopes were dashed upon finding out that not only would I have to go premium but also pay $40 to correct a mistake I had nothing to do with. I entered my dream last names into the contest with hopes of winning the last name I always wanted but no luck there so I guess I'll have to be content to continue my SL as RachelAnne (no last name).

Madonna and Cher have done just fine in life without a last name. You will be OK ! :)

I like the idea of last names.  I do NOT like the idea that people can change their name -- completely removing any way for me to see that someone might be a stalker.  Yes, people have always been able to make alts, but most people don't want to give up their primary alt and all their history/inventory.

Now, any bad actor can erase their identity.  I don't like that.  I wish there would be somewhere on the profile that would show 'name at registration'.

Oh and $40 USD? that is way too much.  40L would be fine.

People changing their name does not take them off your block/mute list or even your derender list if you use a 3rd party viewer.  This is not an issue

Every SL avatar has a key... it is a unique number code that is permanently attached to your avatar no matter how many times you change your name.

I have 6 or 7 accounts with the same email -- and have had for well over a year.  Once upon a time, LL cared a bit more about that.  I think now they only care if it appears you are abusing the privilege of creating extra accounts.

Hmm, and I thought my mind went into the gutter too easily.

I cannot figure out how Jazzhand or Salty is related to sex.  In thinking about it, I'm not sure I even want to know.

I would hope not but this is Linden Lab.

I'm not talking about LL - I'm talking about the resident who may wish to change their name for a fresh start but doesn't want to lose all their inventory. Much cheaper than creating an alt.

Salty I can almost get.  Especially if you say it tastes like warm Salty egg whites.

Jazzhands?  Is that a masturbation reference maybe?

/me shrugs.
Anything can be made to sound dirty I guess.

But that's not in anyway a fresh start.

You might not call it a fresh start, I might not even call it a fresh start... but an individual's definition of what constitutes a fresh start for them is really up to them.

The point is that if people want others to know that they've changed their name, it's up to the people to decide who/how to share that information. LL should not be giving out any information about anyone's account, and people using some sort of script to find out information on another person is creepy and intrusive.

The very definition of stalker creep.

I can look up current username ABC to get their UUID, but I cannot use that UUID to get a list of previous usernames.

If I want to know about person XYZ and there is not current person called that, then I can look up their UUID and then get the current username associated with the UUID.  Someone stalking XYZ can use that to find their current username to continue their stalking.

Person XYZ might think that by changing their username, they are making a clean escape from their stalker.  Unfortunately, LL cannot fully remove that particular tracing ability.

After so many years asking for the return of last names and after waiting for it for so bloody long, LL is only able to come up with a small list of mostly ridiculuos surnames? Come on, LL go back to work and hurry up to add quite  a few serious/Ordinary looking surnames worth to paid 50 bucks for!

Probably in there for the Gor fappers. See muscular guys walking round SL dressed as Conan The Barbarian with the name “Slave Huntsman” and being far too daft to realise that the name might not be sending out the message they wanted it to

Do you have hard data on that compared to residents trying to figure out what variation of Theresa1256 HASNT been taken in the modern age?. If anything, having a last name allowed for greater name customisation. To sign up for an account right now and successfully pick an unused name you would have to open a Sumerian dictionary, throw darts at it and hope the combination of words hasn’t already been used. Then if that fails, switch over to the Mayan calendar and add a couple of baktuns on the end and hope for the best. Back then there were way less “IHaveNoCreativity7383837”

So, guess what? This Huntsman last name sort of rings a bell...as If it was one of the entries I sent to the contest. (I just picked 3 surnames, and from them, I only liked one that has not been chosen so far, and I just forgot the  whole thing) Anyhow, no one has contacted me from LL to let me know that I won or something so...

In any case, yes, it's a quite silly name too :)
