You can sell linden instantly.  Just depends on how you setup your sales parameters.  Of course, the US dollars go into your USD account.  Cashing out or as LL calls it Processing Credit takes time to move the dollars to your Paypal account.

As Cinnamon says, selling and buying can both be instant, unless you use the limit sell/buy in which case they can both take time.

Cashing out your US$ to Paypal does take a few days with Lindex, sometimes a week, if you want to have your funds in your Paypal within 24 hours, its better to sell your Lindens through one of the other approved exchanges. https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Linden_Dollar_Marketplace

If you're talking about selling Linden dollars, then it can be done pretty much instantly by either selling at market rate or looking at the current sales rates and picking a figure 1 point above the highest (if there are a lot of Linden dollars at that rate).

 

If you're talking about cashing out to Paypal, that takes a few days.
