Doubled text in chat and IM

So a friend of mine keeps getting their IMs and local chat doubled. What could be the issue causing this and is there a way to fix it?

Not online at the moment but there is a setting that tells the viewer to show IM in local chat.  If that is clicked then you'll get the individual IM and also get the same message in chat.

what I mean is that everything they type is being doubled, in IM or in local chat it doesnt matter. Everything is doubling.

Ohhh, gotcha. 

Does your friend by chance have a translator attached or turned on in some way?  Then they are seeing the original message and the translated message - just looks like doubled because it is the same language.

nope but it upset them so bad they logged off and said they arent coming back i got to find an answer and solution

If you can get them to at least come back long enough to open a Support ticket with LL, they might get a solution that way.

in the past this happened quite often, what helped me was resetting the modem/router

That's a good possibility, and it's very easy to do.  Just unplug the router and modem from the power for a minute or so, then p[lug everything back in and restart the system.

That's a symptom of the "packets" of information between the viewer and servers being delayed somewhere in the transmission. The viewer/server doesn't get any acknowledgement that the message was received so it re-sends it. Meanwhile, the original message packet finally arrives after being delayed so the message ends up getting repeated. If your friend is using wi-fi have them try using a wired connection.

As others have stated above, the doubling of chat is something to do with lag. If resetting modem/router does not resolve the issue, a suggestion is to have them reach out to their ISP to have someone come out and look at their connection. I've seen this several times and it was always connection related.
