OliberH
I'm new to SecondLife and I have bought a couple of items that I want to have. The problem is that they come in a box and there seems to be no way to unpack the box. All I can do with it is wear the box, which is not what I intended. There is no "click to unpack" option, or at least I couldn't find it. How do I get these boxes unpacked?
TatianaNikolay
You'll want to go to a place that you have rez rights at, either your home or at a free sandbox. You can drag the box on the ground then and either click it to unpack, or right click and select open.

You can also wear the box (like as a HUD), right click it and go to 'contents' tab of the building menu and drag the folder over as well into the inventory. Helps especially when you're on the go. OliberH
Thanks for the answers, but they don't get me any further. What are rez rights? How do I get to a place where I have them? I've tried dragging the box to the ground, but to no avail. It seems to be attached to my body. When I right click it, the normal menu appears as if I right click my avatar. There is no contents tab. Scylla Rhiadra
"Rez rights" are permissions to rez, i.e., place objects on a parcel. Generally, most places restrict those permissions to owners, renters, or members of groups associated with the parcel. However, all "sandboxes" are places where anyone can rez an object on the ground. If you search for "sandbox" you'll find a multitude of these. One that I use on occasion is the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives, here: https://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Natoma/210/163/27/ If the box is actually attached to your avatar, you won't be able to "drag" it off. You can right click it, either on your screen or in your inventory, and choose "Detach." You can also choose "Drop" in the first case, but generally that's a bad idea, especially if you aren't in a place where you do have rez rights. Once it's in your inventory, and properly detached, you can drag and drop it in a sandbox. Then right click it, and choose "Open." The box that opens should give you the option of copying the contents to your inventory. Once it's in there, use the "Recent" tab in your inventory to find those contents; they'll be in a folder together in your "Objects" folder. You should also be able to right click it while it's on you, choose "Edit," and then go to the "Contents" tab of the Edit dialog that appears, but that's kind of a weird way of doing things.
Mollymews
we have to be on land that has Build enabled to rez a box on the ground use the inworld Search to find a place inworld which allows us to do this. Search keyword: SANDBOX then drag the box from Inventory onto the ground. Right-click on the box and Open. Then on the popup dialog click the Copy button. And done the reason that a box ends up attached to our avatar is that we drag/dropped on our avatar. So make sure our mouse cursor is over the ground before we release the mouse button edit add: what Scylla said Edited March 2, 2020 by Mollymews
Nalates Urriah
We've been around SL too long. It is difficult to NOT use jargon in our instructions. I suspect you have made your way through all this and gotten into the box. But, in case... Every place in SL is on some land... or over some land... As in real life (RL) someone owns the land. There is 'public' land we say is owned by the Governor, actually meaning Linden Lab the operators of the "game" Second Life (SL). As in RL there is privately owned land and rented land. In which case someone has leased a server from the Lab and owns the "region" of land, a 256m by 256m by 4,000m-altitude chunk, the server supports. The region can be subdivided into smaller parcels and sold and leased to third parties. The land owner controls the land and sets what can be done on the land and who can enter it. Most land owners do not want strangers littering their land with stuff. So, they remove the general right for people to put things on their land, which we call Rez... (This comes from the computer game idea of a player resurrecting and reappearing in the game.) Because there is a need for non-landowners to be able to rez things, get them out where they can do something with them, there are public places called sandboxes. People can rez things in those sandboxes. You find them by doing a search in the viewer using either Search or the World Map on the term sandbox. There are lots of them. There are common sandboxes that anyone can use. There are membership sandboxes where one has to be a member of some in-world group. There are Premium Sandboxes that require one be a Premium Member of SL, meaning we pay Linden Lab a monthly, quarterly, or annual fee for membership rights and get to do things free members can't. Sandboxes give people places to rez things and some people use them as places to build things, think house, car, dog, etc. Sandboxes usually do a trash collection every so many hours, 2, 4, 8,12, or 24. Whatever is there at cleanup time gets returned to the owner. As you have found, boxes from your inventory can be worn. Not the easiest way to get them open. So, merchants put scripts (computer programs) in them so that when worn they pop onto your screen and let you click them then poke whatever is inside into your inventory. Or just poke stuff in your inventory when worn. You found a merchant that apparently did not script their box to open. So, it is up to you to manually open the box and take out the stuff. You need to understand how boxes work in SL. Not a "have to" but it will make your life easier if you do. Here is the Torley Linden tutorial on Second Life boxes (2007 video - boxes have never changed). There are tutorials on every aspect of SL. For somethings they are the best way to learn. For others it is easier to ask in-world in a help group or here on the forum. Be aware SL changes. Look at the newest videos available. Remember. No everyone in SL knows what they are doing or how SL works. So, salt everything you are told.
MaxMare
If you have a LL home (the free one you get with premium membership) or some of your friends has one, or perhaps look for a public sandbox..once you are in such area, take the box out of your inventory and drag it to the floor (this is called "rezzing"), right click on the box and select open/copy to inventory and it`ll get unpacked, once you are done either pick the box from the floor or delete it... Hope this helps!
Bitsy Buccaneer
"Changing room" can also be a good search string to find somewhere you can rez your box (put it on the ground) to open it. There are still a few around I think. They tend to be quieter than sandboxes. Welcome to Second Life. It's beyond confusing at first, but worth sticking with. You can do or be or make anything you, or someone else, can imagine.
BelindaN
I like to keep things simple, and the box thing drove me mad when I was new. Even now with my own place and rezz rights, occasionally something won't open or rezz on the ground. When that happens I just type sandbox in the search bar, tp there and it never fails to rezz on the ground. Maybe that's just a quirk of SL

Mesh buildings add to the complication. Mesh buildings as skyboxes can be a disaster in the making, not a place to rez No-Copy items. These rez problems or Failure to Rez... sounds like an erectile dysfunction euphemism... which I suppose it could be in SL... 😆 ...are mostly from the viewer having a difficult time figuring out what you are clicking on. Selecting a spot on actual terrain/ground seems to work everytime. If you rez boats you often run into the problem of the viewer looking through the water you clicked on and picking a point on the seafloor usually a ways away from what you expected. Sort of the same thing happens with mesh. Clicking on prims usually works. Unless there is transparency involved. Then the click may pass through and select whatever is behind the prim, which gotcha had me deleting a friends house unintentionally. 😬

Katheryn Llewellyn
https://adventuresinsecondlife.com/2021/01/19/noob-no-more-unpacking-purchases-and-freebies/ One of the things you need to do is to go to a Rezz Area or Sandbox Area. Helping Haven has five locations where you can unpack boxes. Landmarks are below the Package Type Instructions. Rez Area by Helping Haven Plaza: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Helping Haven Gateway/49/97/25 Helping Haven Main Sandbox: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Helping Haven Gateway/37/94/1002 Helping Haven Skygarden Sandbox: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Helping Haven Gateway/88/99/301 Helping Haven Shared Homes Rez Area: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Helping Haven Gateway/202/33/301 Helping Haven Freebie Rez Area: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Helping Haven Gateway/200/44/25 Package Type #1 - Add Me Unpacker This type of unpacker will require you to add it to yourself. Step 1 is to right click select the box icon of the item you are choosing to unpack. Step 2 left click and then scroll down to select Add so the object is added to you. The object will appear on your avatar and in some cases trigger an animation, like a shopping pose of a pose where the item appears to be in your hands. Step 3 Once your Avatar is in the pose position and you can see the object, you will need to move your mouse to where the object is on your avatar. NOTE: If your camera controls are set to front, side or rear view, when your mouse is in the optimal spot, it will turn into a small hand icon. Step 4 Click on your left mouse key usually under your index finger. That will trigger a blue menu asking you to accept the item in the box you are unpacking. Step 5 Click Accept and the folder and the folder contents of the box you are unpacking appear in your inventory. NOTE: You can delete the unpacker by using the round menu and selecting delete, or you can detach the unpacker and just in case, drag it into the unpacked folder. Package Type #2 – Drag and Drop Box Unpacker NOTE: This box icon may not be easy to identify. This used to be the way most vendors had users unpack the items they gave away or sold. Step 1 Press right mouse button on the icon for the item you want to unpack and drag it to the floor. Step 2 Click on the box and press left mouse button. Step 3 In the Round Menu, select Open Step 4 On the bottom right of pop-up menu, click on Copy To Inventory Package Type #3 Heads Up Display (HUD) Unpacker Step 1 Add the object you want to unpack Step 2 An icon will appear on your screen. NOTE: Some HUD unpackers automatically are triggered when added and ask you to accept the folder with the unpacked items; others required you to click on a part of the icon on your screen to trigger the blue menu that asks you to accept the contents into your inventory. FYI If any unpacker, states it is empty and needs to be deleted, that means that the items in the unpacker have been fully distributed and you can not unpack that box again. In that case, if you lose the unpacked item or delete a portion of the unpacked item, you will need to go to the store and have the object redelivered or if it is a freebie, go back to the store and get the object again.
