Hi @VonWulfen!  Lots of good advice here.  I will just add that I teach a weekly class on SL land.  It's held on Saturdays (tomorrow!) at 12 noon SL time, at Caledon Oxbridge University, and is free to attend.  We talk about ways to find land, and go on a field trip where we practice how to evaluate land for purchase.  Maybe I'll see you there!

Yes. You need to pay for Premium, and instead of claiming the Linden Home you will need to purchase (pay extra for) a 1024m parcel of mainland. If you purchase more than 1024m, you will also have to pay an additional monthly fee, depending on how much more. I think up to 2048m is  $5 (US dollars) per month. Up to 1024m there is no additional monthly fee.

it's $7 now for 2048.

In addition to all other suggestions, you can take a Linden Home, and then put a big, flat prim 2000 m or more, up in the sky.

Use this as your building platform. You can experiment with building, and while you do that, you can take some trips to Mainland, look at the land for sale, and in general just have fun.

It is not allowed to use the Linden Home on ground as a sandbox. But, 2000 m up in the sky, you have more freedom.

The benefit with this, is that you don't have to think about purchasing land until you are ready. You have a place to build in peace and quiet while you look for land to place your building on.

You can also place a few parts of furniture in your Linden Home on the ground, and have it as your base to return to. And get some vehicles, and travel around.

On the Land page, make sure you select a house like Traditional, or Victorian. They have a square part of land, 32 x 32 m and double prims allowed than a camper. A boat almost always come with a long, narrow part of ground, not a nice square.sandwich.thumb.png.28ffedb130bff7d841d420d9d195239a.png

More information about how to get a Linden Home is in this thread: https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/441469-help-and-info-to-get-a-new-linden-home-or-try-to/

This was written when it was almost hopeless to get a new Linden Home. This weekend there will be many who abandon their home, because they get ready for the next theme that will be released soon, Log Homes.

Here are a thread about placing skyboxes up in the air: https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/447951-how-to-easily-rez-skyboxes-even-in-bellisseria/

You can do this, and when you have your prim up in the air, just don't place a skybox there.

Since I live in a Linden Home, I have a small thing I wish all did: Place a bench or chair next to the door of the house on ground, and hang a lamp... the homes look so sad when they are totally empty.

Many thanks for the advice. I think your suggestion is the way to start. I like the idea of a Victorian house, it would be a good fit as I am into Steampunk.

I could then practice making steampunk furniture :)

How do I visit the Linden home plots to have a good look at what I like in advance?

Well, if you want to look at the Home &  Garden Expo 2020, there are 2 demo regions that showcases Linden homes. I will be totally honest, I have decorated a house and a boat there. It was announced in the Linden Homes subforum, and I jumped on it.

The benefit of going there, is that it's open for all, you are not intruding in anybody's private home. I decorated a blue house model called "Hardy" that sits between a "Shelley" and a "Verne". These are three of the four Victorian house types all next to each other.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bellisseria Demo/144/51/23

I have filled my demo house with everything I could stuff in, so you will need to lower your draw distance and wait for all the textures to rez.

The fourth Victorian house type is the Doyle, and you find it here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bellisseria Demo 2/185/51/23

There are examples of Traditionals, Victorians, Houseboats and Trailers/Campers in both Demo regions.

It can be a fine time to visit now, since the traffic is low the last week. It isn't so much lag anymore.

This isn't a real copy of the regions, since you will not find all 4 types of homes mixed in one region. The majority of regions have 1 or 2 different types of homes, let us say boats and houses, or houses and campers.

Make sure you visit before the Expo ends, March 5th.

EDIT:

And here are a teleport to the Log Homes demo, the new house type - that will be very popular. But if you want one of the other 4 types, you can get lucky now, as people move.

Yeah 4096m is the build limit.

I often put my skyboxes around 4080-4090 depending on how tall the ceiling is...

It's basically rude to have anything in the sky below 1000m. Some few items can look nice and fitting there... but usually people who put stuff below 1000m are the ones folks are talking about when they talk about "SL blight"...

I'd like to put you in charge of eliminating "world map signs", but, alas, I am nobody.
