Edit: Scrolling through a lot of you are missing the point of this post... I'm asking if YOU ever thought of doing something like this, I want to know the whys if so not the full detail to reveal yourself.  Just a question that's been on my mind as of late.

No, I'm not asking you to out yourself or give information on your main or even alts that you may have.  I just want to see the general thoughts on doing this.

So.  My account is nearly 8/9 years old at this point, I've acquired a lot of items over my time that I've... Never deleted for the most part because they were exclusives from hunts or once a month shopping things like Colab88.

I've been thinking.. Maybe I should restart, start fresh with a new name and just.. Leave this behind.

But then I think about all the rare gachas I've gotten and it becomes difficult, sone of those aren't available anymore or the rares that I have don't drop all that often unlike others.   And then the amount Id have to put in at first to look at least half way decent before exploring again or even hiding out in sims I've become a fixture in..

Discussion questions: How many of you have done or thought of doing this? (Starting a new account completely.)

Do you keep the old account for nostalgia reasons? (I would.. I also use this account to sell Gachas I don't want to keep.)

How do you feel about others doing this exact thing, Do you know anyone who has?

I have thought about trashing Marigold Devin from time to time, for various reasons, but usually I just shove her in the wardrobe for a while and go offline until I can get my head back together again. Her (my!) inventory is ridiculous, but not as huge as some, and I haven't really got on board with all the mesh stuff, and I don't enjoy putting together outfits - I am a wash and go kind of girl in all my lives. I identify with this main avatar. She is me. I am her. I cannot trash her. I have a few alts, rarely used, but with very tidy inventories, and on odd occasions I have really enjoyed logging in as them because they feel less cluttered.

Yes, I know several people who have started a new account completely.  I don't have any particular feelings about others chucking an account away to start a brand new one.  They all appear to have their reasons, and one of them is no doubt the type who would leave all their clothes on the beach and fake their own death in real life if they thought they could get away with it!

I think if you have any doubts about starting over, I would advise you to keep the main account and just start a brand new one. We can all have several alts anyway, and it is fun trying out new identities.

I actually did do this, It was one of my better decisions tbh.

Do you keep the old account for nostalgia reasons?
Nope, I deleted it.. I kind of regret doing so since it was made just before they took out last names in trade for naming everyone "Resident".
The people I knew when I came back were long gone, the account wasn't all that well fitted to me so.. while I regret it, It's also no big loss to me.

How do you feel about others doing this exact thing, Do you know anyone who has?
I'd tell them to go for it, but keep the old account open... they may want to go back to it eventually if they've been known as that account for a long time.

This is my original account, and I've never been tempted to start over on another. I have never quite understood why people do start over with new accounts, but as it's none of my business, I don't put too much thought to it, either. Whatever floats your boat.

Having said that, if the issue is simply "too much stuff", well... my inventory is closing in on 100K. If it starts to get on my nerves, I will just shove it all into boxes. I have way too much history and memories to ever want to toss this account aside.

Lost passwords with forgotten email accounts are the cause of many.  Someone takes a short break and then can't get back on.

My 1st ever SL account was made at a friends party and then forgotten about after the weekend was over.  About a year after that I created a new account along with my husband and some people from our gaming guild.  Well that group petered out shortly after which led to main #3, someone to play without my husband.  A male someone.  It was a poor decision but ... anyway ... On to main #4 (because I couldn't remember #2's password) which I kept for about about a year.

Then Clover came into SL.  Rhonda was created for the specific reason to be a couple with Clover Jinx.  We both made new accounts to be partnered together from their fist day and have been together ever since.  We meet people as a couple, make new friends as a couple and have always been known as a couple.  I am very happy with the decision to create new accounts together.  It took me 5 tries to get it right

I still have a few alts I play with for various reasons but I can't see ever making a new main again.

I almost lost what few alts I do have to forgetting. This is actually my third "main" account. The very first account I only used to attend a memorial in 2004. The second account I ended up creating became my main and if I can ever get it back it will still be my "main". Thing is I've gotten so used to this account that I'll still use it the most.

As for every creating a new main? Not going to happen. I haven't even logged in any of my alts in over a year now.

And...I'm not paying $50USD for a last name when all the ones I have now didn't cost me anything (extra) either. LL screwed up the format, they can bloody well fix it.

(me being ON topic for once)

No. I've no alts other than a couple of "crash test dummies" who never rez outside my workshop and probably never will have. Right from the start I put a lot of effort into my SL self and my avatars being "me" - not necessarily in appearance (although there is always one that's reasonably close) but in that they always express a genuine aspect of who I am. Even my username when I first signed up was a laborious process of searching for surnames that struck a chord, that connected with a part of who I was, then hoping that my real first name was available for them. (ok, actually my real MIDDLE name, because there's a funny tradition in my family that the eldest lad in each generation goes by his middle name - I haven't ever used my actual first name on anything but tax forms or legal stuff) Unfortunately that latter part was a futile effort because "David" is such a common name that it was always gone by the time I found one of the surnames I could live with, along with just about all alternate spellings too. Fortunately, my voracious appetite for books of every genre came to my rescue. The hacker and founder of The Black Sun  in "Snow Crash" put a 5, for the roman v, in his name and I'm a hardcore IT geek so I gleefully appropriated "Da5id" and if I was pulling one name from a book, why not the other - and being deeply involved in the pagan community the choice was obvious.

Having put that much effort into being "me" in some meaningful fashion, there's no way I would ever let this account go and start over. I may "reinvent" myself, create a new avatar that expresses a different side of myself, move on to doing different things in (second) life, but I am the sum of my life in both the real and virtual worlds and to attempt to deny that and totally recreate myself in either one is folly - at least for me.

I created Amanda after my 2005 Original acquired a tech-savvy stalker that LL was unable to do anything about.

I’m still sentimental about my Original avatar (I’m a sentimental person), but Amanda is “me” in SL in every way that counts. I can’t see putting her away....

Since its unlikely that Keen will make the list of new Last Names, I’ll probably be “Resident” for the foreseeable future, and I can live with that 🙂

My building alt took on more of a slife of her own than I would have guessed beforehand. In part because of the fresh new start feeling. That was fun for a while. The longer I run both though, the more similar they are. They favour different time periods for clothes, but that's largely to simplify shopping and I only buy FP things with my main. The friends I talk with regularly know both of them. Would never think of getting rid of either. Why?

Sometimes I think about changing Bitsy's when that arrives, but then one friend or another talks me out of it. We'll see.

I was mostly thinking of those who "start over" (as in, attempt to erase their SL past) when I typed what I said about it. None of your 5 tries seem to fall into that category!

I made my first account in 2006, and the last name I picked off the list was very close to the name of my boyfriend at the time. Once he became my ex-boyfriend, I suddenly didn't want that name any more so I started over. The original account was deleted in 2008 and my only regret is that I am now missing out on the L$500 premium stipend instead of L$300. But that's a difference of, what, less than a dollar a week. So in the grand scheme of things it's not really a big deal.

I wouldn't want to start over due to a large inventory though. In fact the larger it gets, the less likely I am to abandon, purely because otherwise I would think about how much actual money I would be literally throwing away, and I'd curl up in a ball and cry. I'd have no concerns about tossing a little-used alt but this one is way past the point that I'd consider starting over.  It would cost me tens of thousands of L$ just to replace my body, head, mods and skins, and that's not even considering starting on hair and clothes. This is also why I have no particular interest in playing with alts, it just seems like an un-necessary money-drain to me.

This is my original very first account created in 2007, and it's still my main avatar. Later I created few alt accounts. They come handy when for example I need help in adjusting poses in furniture. And yes, an alt is also handy when there is an urge to get a second Linden home. 😁 My alts are still very basic avatars. As I don't use them often there is no need to make them very nice looking with the latest things.

I have my fair share of alts but i could never ditch this account i've invested way too much time and L$ in to 'me' over the past 12 years. I don't have an overly large inventory only around 41 - 42k but i do have some irreplaceable items tucked away in there made by a dear friend that has since deleted their account that i'd hate to lose

Never thought about deleting my account. I just keep adding until I can't keep track of them anymore. Some of my alts had specific purposes (dancing/escorting, Gorean play, aliens) so I kind of play each of them when the mood hits me.

Do you keep the old account for nostalgia reasons?

Again, wouldn't get rid of them. Two of them are over 10 years old and NOT MESH..makes it easier to change from one personality to another when I want to change it up. That way, I try not to get too bored.

Let people do what they want. It's SL after all..if we're not here to have fun, what's the point? I'm sure that I do, but they've never told me.  They just fall off the face of the world and I never see them again. I assume that they've gotten into something else. It's sad to lose people like that, but hey...not my SL.

When my first avatar was heart broken and just couldn't log in anymore, I tried making a new account.  I only used it for a short time and decided that she really wasn't me.  So my first alt, Kali Wylder, took over as the main avatar instead.  Kali feels like me. Pavanne, the experimental new main, pretty much retired until I got involved with tiny empires at which time all of my alts joined TE and became my subjects so i could advance to princess faster. I'm still using Kali Wylder as my main avatar and I am no longer active in Tiny Empires.  My alt army, as they came to be called, including my first avatar, Kattatonia Wickentower,  are all still active basic accounts and I would never ever delete any of them.  They just don't log in very often.
