Talligurl
From time to time as I move through SL things happen that leave me mystified. Often when I mention them here on the forums someone can give me a perspective on it I didn't know and help me to understand. Recently I had one of these mysterious moments and maybe some of you can help. First however a little background, some time ago I tried the whole AFK sex place thing. I would leave myself logged on with my avi parked on some piece of furniture with adult animations while I went to work or slept in RL. In hopes that some of my friends would find me and put something in my tip jar, I started clicking the box that allows people to find my location on the map. Eventually I stopped doing the AFK thing, but never changed the fact that people could find me. Recently I was at my home when I get an IM asking why I am looking at someone. I assure him that I am not, but he isn't happy, in fact he is pretty irate at me. After a bit of back and forth about what was wrong, I eventually figure out that the fact that I had it set so he could find me, was causing something that was upsetting him. I then fixed it for him (removed him from my list), but I am still wondering why this was even an issue. He was in the same sI'm as I, and he was in his home. I am cureosity as to what my allowing him to find him was doing on his end that created an issue.
Pamela Galli
Some ppl just like to find someone in their universe to blame when anything goes even slightly amiss, so it could be anything. Does not need to be related to your settings in any way. Some people, if they bought a chair from me ten years ago, from then on blame me for everything that goes wrong for them in SL, things that I have no control over and have nothing to do with the chair. 1
Madelaine McMasters
Though I'm an only child and childless, I still understand... "Mmmmmooooooommmmmm, she's looking at meeeeeeeeeee!!!" SL is fertile ground for paranoia, Talli. You allowed someone to see where you are. They saw that you are where they are. That's a seed. Ivanova Shostakovich
I frequently allow friends to find me on the map. But I've never had your experience. It's possible this guy was misunderstanding how the whole thing worked and believed it was automatically reciprocal. Or maybe this was simply a case of mistaken identity? I'm not sure, but clicking that little box off was probably the right thing to do.
MoiraKathleen
I'm not sure that you allowing him to find you would show anything on his side. From the best that I can tell -- just testing with an alt - nothing different shows up in the friends list on their end. You said you were on the same region when he was complaining. Do you have your viewer preferences set so that it sends look at targets? and did you happen to have your camera pointed in the direction of his house? I have my preferences set to neither send nor show look at targets, but I'm wondering if he had show lookat targets set, that might have been what he saw if your camera was pointed in his general direction - even if you weren't specifically looking at / cammed in to his house? I should do some testing some evening with an alt, so that I can understand it better and be more certain about what I'm talking about.
Talligurl
I was looking in my own home, not sure what direction his was. I never see look at targets, I do not know if i send them. Edited February 1, 2020 by Talligurl

Solar Legion
From the sound of it, he wouldn't have any clue whatsoever what the different icons/checkboxes in the Friends list actually do Unless he was poking around the Map and hit the Online Friends dropdown box, he'd have no way of knowing he could see where you are when online (this assumes he's more than a bit clueless) A simple explanation should have sufficed - including the fact that unless he specifically gives you permission to do so, you cannot track his position on the Map Should he persist, block and remove - that sort of 'friend' is not worth the time That's about as simple as that gets. Oh yes, if you don't know anything about the LookAt system - including how to see them - then you are most certainly sending them. Under most circumstances, there is no need to shut them off either. Friends will show the same color as you on the minimap (or otherwise a different color that the default from others). As for the OP description: @Talligurl - did you attach anything with regard to that AFK place? Mostly rhetorical question, because if this person saw any indication other than what is show on the minimap, it would have to be some kind of attachment you are they were wearing what could have created particles between you (there are some magic HUDs that will do this automatically, but must be invoked). I wonder if that person could have been wearing some thing that does this as some kind of "friend locator" and they forgot they were wearing it, or didn't;t understand how it works, etc. There could be hundreds of plausible explanations. But the most important one is how laughable it is that anyone thinks they are that important and paranoid over being "looked at". I do not turn off my look-at pointer and I'll alt click you in a heartbeat. And if you jump angrily into my IMs about it, I'll tell you to stop me if you can and that "ll just leave my pointer on you until you or I leave the reagin, whichever comes first. Then block you. Because Ima biotch thataway. Hahahaha!
Nova Convair
It's lack of intelligence, lack of the ability to read, lack of the ability to think. You showed him your position so you must be able to see his position too. Plain and simple - so you are spying on him. You're a spy !!! 😋😎
