Real jazz. Not the kind of pop pseudo-jazz crap that gets played at the more "elegant" (/me snorts) clubs in SL.

And something other than swing or big band. I like 30s and 40s jazz as much as anyone, but it's almost impossible to hear stuff like Dizzie and Bird, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, and indeed just about anything that comes after 1945 in SL.

I'd definitely hang out in a place that played that kind of stuff.

There. Was that sufficiently "urban elite hipster girl" for you?

A lot of places here in the San Francisco Bay Area will have varied music depending on the tastes of the proprietor and primary clientele.

I see everything from pop, pop-jazz (that stuff that comes from Sinatra / Sammy Davis and their followers), real jazz, reggae, salsa, mariachi, and quite often local live acts.

Cross the bay into San Francisco and the music gets a LOT blander... usually some 'top whatever' spotify playlist because all culture has basically left the city...

You know, the place in the city where yuppies, intellectuals, hipsters, and everyone in between hang out to get their caffeine fix? Name some songs that could fit the ambiance of a cafe.

Real intellectuals hang out at libraries, not cafes 😛

But, if my target market were as you describe, I'd stick to relatively sedate music and make sure it was a very eclectic mix demonstrating global diversity.  Lately I'm on a huge Mongolian music kick, and if you get past the stuff that tends more towards metal (Hanggai, Tengger Cavalry), and take the more instrumental stuff (Altan Urag and Sedaa, for instance, or some of the softer songs by The Hu) it would be great background music for a cafe.  Similar with some Celtic music.  Mix in some classical, some jazz, along with some Ravi Shankar and traditional Japanese music, and you've got a great ambience for both solitary reflection and reading as well intellectual discussions.

Of course, 90% of the clientele would still just be checking their social media accounts rather than engaging in anything useful.

cafe music is sooooo yesterday

the e-girl/e-boy innies don't go to places where they serve music with the coffee.  Is all about the conversation now, with all the other innnies online. Ignoring everybody else at your table

if want to get with the innies then no music ok.  Give out freebie fake iphones to any yuppie intellectual hipster what wanders in,  so they can easy be a innie. And you be the inniest-most cafe on all SL

I initially read that as "ineffectuals" and thought you SO clever!

Then I realized that we could actually distinguish between the two animals.  Intellectuals hang out in libraries.  Ineffectuals hang out in cafes.

...or play computer games.

You owe me a cup of coffee or a new new monitor, take your pick 😛

Actually, where I work, "ineffectuals" hang out for there entire career in our IT department
