Sorry to ask a question that's already been asked probably 598 times but I'm stupid. I drew my lashes using Catwa UV in Photoshop CS 6, made an alpha channel but it doesn't show as transparent in SL no matter what I do. My channels look like this. I save as .tga and make sure alpha channels is checked but I must be doing something wrong. Do I have to save with only the alpha channel visible? Or do all the channels have to be visible?

If you are saving the texture as TGA, then be sure that you save it as a 32-bit texture, not a 24-bit one.  If you are saving it as PNG, use the Save for Web option, which does the same thing.  The important thing is that the alpha information is in that last 8-bits, so if you save as a 24-bit texture, you will lose it.

Is there any benefit for using PNGs instead of TGA?

Not truly.  Personally, I prefer TGA because I find it easier to fiddle with its alpha channel in Photoshop. For most uses, though, PNG is quick and easy and produces the same quality image, as least to my eye.
