Question

Apologies for the title, but I am rather stumped and the title actually does cover the load.

I am a scripter and a friend of mine wanted my help trying figure out why her friend keeps saying "i farted" at regular intervals when she is definitely not typing that herself.

I arrived when she had strip[ped completely naked, no attachments, no system layers even, nada. Just a shape, skin, hair and eyes. I have scanned her for attachments but there was nothing there at all.

I made her reset her avie to default (Avatar => Avatar Health => Reset Default Female Avatar (character test) ) which SHOULD take care of any attachments and HUDs that are stuck or glued on or whatever, but that didn't help.

I even thought of an annoying script inserting itself into the LSL bridge of Firestorm, but the  problem persisted even in another viewer which detaches the bridge by default.

She has RLVa off (this was confirmed) and we are out of ideas.

One more thing: when she says "I farted" it is definitely not an object pretending to be her. Not only are those this usually bad with display names, their chat also does not show up in a chat bubble (I have that enabled)

So, does anyone have any idea at all what may be going on, and how to get rid of this? My friend's friend is starting to get really annoyed with the whole situation and is about ready to try anything.

There are no ways to do this via scripted means, nor can this be done via RLV, which leaves the following possibilities:

  1. It is a maliciously crafted gesture. Gestures can have delays set for a very long time, so even after using it when it appears legit, it does a different action. Additionally, they can be bound to hotkeys. My recommendation for this is to check gestures. This is the likely culprit.
  2. They are using a.. well let's say untrustworthy viewer. Some viewers that do things they shouldn't come with backdoors and other trickery that allow their designers to take control of avatars. Ensure that the viewer your friend is using is a real viewer from the official source such as Firestorm, black dragon, alchemy, and of course the official viewer.
  3. The least likely scenario is your friend is "goofing" around and doing it. I'm not accusing them of this, but this is a possibility as I have seen people fake unsolvable issues before.

This seems to have been the issue. I never thought of gestures but after she deactivated ALL of her gestures (no idea how many), the issue has not returned.

Thank you so much, you have helped preserve my friend's sanity... what was left of it :D:D:D
