I would like to get your opinion about copyright, when using song lyrics in SL.
My plan is to write some song lyrics onto walls or banners, using them instead of pics... As its going to happen on a public hangout, i have some doubts about if its even legal or not.

Thanks in advance.

When you put excerpts from the song, you can suffice writing it as quotes.

If you put the full lyric of a song on a wall , I' d advise to at least put the copyright owner along with it to avoid any trouble, but I doubt recordcompanies will come after you with big lawsuits.

I think it's fine. You're not selling it right? People put song lyrics in their profiles all the time.

as wesley says is a technical violation when we do this

like you say tho, not every copyright holder is going to chase us for quoting them.  The main thing I think is to attribute our quote to the author. Some authors are cool with this as it can lead to a reader to look further into the author's works

I agree on attributing to the artist. I was about to add sentence for that. Thanks for mentioning it.

I agree with those that say go ahead. The likelihood of getting in trouble is small. Most companies send a Cease and Desist letter before starting court action. Then you take it down. No letter keep going...

In general lawsuits have to be able to recover the cost of court and attorneys. Otherwise there is little point.

No, its just a banner hanging from the wall, showing that lyrics.

Resi, if its whole works then best to use those that are out of copyright

Its the half of the whole song. Around 6 lines. Yeah, its pretty simple :)
