How can I help work on Linden Roads?

I've found some conflicting information that I need to clarify - maybe you guys can help! :)

I'm trying to navigate how I can help update the mainland grid - specifically some roads near my house. Like all of the road land, it's owned by a group started by Michael Linden called the "Linden Department of Public Works". The group description reads:

Quote

"The LDPW will organise teams of resident builders, artists and scripters to create new content for use by Linden Lab, and for the SL community. Resident builders ("moles") will be provided with specific build projects and will oversee progress before taking ownership of the content once work is completed.

See http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/08/the-linden-department-of-public-works/ for the first announcement, and later blog posts for more info!"

The blog post doesn't go anywhere. :(

A quick Google search for Linden Department of Public Works sent me here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Department_of_Public_Works and I sent my information to Derrick Linden, but he hasn't responded (To be fair, I'm not sure how often that account gets checked and I bet that poor guy gets a million notecards a day, so I wasn't expecting a response). However, the wiki says this page was last modified on 18 March 2019, so it seems like the project could still be happening, right?

The point is - I want to help. I'm a decent builder. I've built more sims, cities, experiences, etc. than I can count. I'm not a mesh creator, but I'm pretty good at pairing up and editing creations other people have made. I could certainly use the stuff in the basic Linden inventory every avatar gets and I think I could even convince a few of my friends that are mesh creators to donate some simple items that can be used to update and beautify the SL mainland grid. At the very least, I can terraform and copy roads.

I want to help, but I'm not sure how. Is there a volunteer group for something like this or is getting paid to be a Mole the only way to help? Anyone out there an actual Mole? Or know how to go about submitting your information to join the team?

I'm not sure where to start. The announcement you quote dates back to 2008 and the "resident builders, artists and scripters" were the first Moles. They have occasionally supplemented with new Moles since then but not very often and nowadays it's all about mesh anyway.

The Linden Roads were one of the Moles' very first big projects and it was finished years ago. Michael did do some maintenance himself when neccessary and even filled in the odd hole in the network the Moles somehow overlooked but as far as I know, LPDW hasn't been involved in the road work at all since he left. I'm not sure but it's possible Governance is in charge of the roads now.

Actually, they're hiring new Moles all the time. I'm not sure how many they've added in the past year, but I know there are a lot of new ones, and they cross a very wide spectrum of talents.

OP did the correct thing sending their information to Derrick. No idea how long it's been since the notecard was sent, but if it's been more than 2 weeks, perhaps send it again. The holidays are just now over and most Lindens and Moles were off work during a good portion of that time.

I'd like to have the ability to order custom road work, for when you need to attach your driveway or road to a Linden road. Just as you would from a real-life municipality. Sometimes you just need a curb cut or a tiny ramp, but some roads have sizable barriers alongside, and you might need a section of hedge or berm or guard rail removed. There are places where someone had to place a sizable arched object to get onto a Linden road.

As a warm-up exercise, people who want that job could work on the paved road to dirt road connection in Belli.

Open a support ticket and ask. Works wonders.

Apparently this IS a possibility and through a ticket. I've seen many places in Heterocera along the road side where this was done. The same with SLRR where a switch was put in so a parcel owner and link to the main line. I imagine it would be a similar ticket request along the lines of "I'd like to purchase this abandoned land" kind of thing where you give grid coordinates, descriptive detail, et al.

I have done it myself and it does work!

Mind you, I'm a self-proclaimed Linden/Mole brown-noser extraordinaire and tend to do a lot of fawning and groveling in my requests, but I can drive my train right from my own property onto the SLRR so...

I've been interested in this too lately, so I'm glad the OP asked the question! I had seen that apparently Moles have been paid positions (at least in the past). I'll happily do it for free!! I think there's plenty of ways that us dedicated SL residents can pitch in here and there to help keep things looking spruced up and flowing correctly. There are more of us and we tend to see more of the continents on a regular basis than I'm sure the Linden folks and Moles have the chance to see. And with all the Bellisseria work taking place, I'm sure they are sp read thin. There should be a Second Life version of the Civilian Conservation Corps (except co-ed...)!!

i much prefer that where residents can/do get involved in this is thru the Mole programme.  When a resident has demonstrable chops then they are worthy of hire

a thing

when a resident wants stuff moved on LDPW land to better suit their access to their parcel then the issue for the LDPW is that resident parcel owners are transient.  Here today, gone tomorrow. A new resident parcel owner moves in and wants stuff re/moved again to suit them

same with trees and rocks and stuff. Please to remove the tree that is blocking my view from the outdoor patio that I put in this spot on my parcel. Please to add a tree to provide shade for my patio which I put in this spot. And so it goes

with Belli parcels being a fixed size and a limit on the ways the main building can be situated on the parcel then the Moles have been pretty good in placing the egress point in relation to the main building.  Like with houses the egress/gate is usually lined up with the front door. With campers then the egress point is typically toward the side of building. Which makes sense as typically we want vehicle access to a camper

on Belli parcels where the egress point doesn't make any sense in relation to the building then the LDPW is open to making changes

Beth gives an example of this above.  When we live next to a railway line then it makes sense that the resident will more likely want access to the railway line. And when that access is blocked and the resident makes the case for this, terrain allowing, then LDPW  go oh! ok that makes sense and does it. The typical case that can lead to re/move of LDPW stuff, is when the case is made for vehicle access (like a driveway) in addition to the current egress point which is designed for pedestrian access. We can't actually get the car in and out using that egress point.

but if we just want changes for aesthetic reasons as it suits us the resident, then is understandable when LPDW doesn't get into these kinds of change requests

Hi All!

Just for clarification, Governance doesn't work on land issues.  That is primarily handled by the Land Team.

Governance just handles, well, governance issues.  The team tries to ensure that everyone is following the Terms of Service, Terms and Conditions and most related policies (they do not handle legal issues, etc), and they investigate reported violations, through Abuse Reports and flagged Marketplace Listings.

You can attend the various in world User Groups that are hosted by the different teams if you would like to ask questions or get insight in what each team does, and does not, handle.

It really is worth going to these meetings, if you can. Sometimes the different teams drop information about what might be upcoming for their teams and you can get a jump on information regarding future releases long before the information is posted to the blogs, etc.

This is awesome, thanks so much for this link! I had heard about meetings in the past, but didn't know when or how to get involved. I will definitely start attending as I can! ☺️

@Dakota Linden do the minutes of these meetings get posted up anywhere?

Hi!

Honestly, I do not know.  I do know that some users who attend usually will post a summary of the meeting in the respective forums. I have seen some users post information in the General section after meetings with a basic summary of what was discussed, specifically back when last names were being talked out.

Perhaps a suggestion for the Teams?  Maybe attend and ask if they are willing to post minutes or a summary somewhere?
